Welcome to the September newsletter

Dear

It's that time of year again when we open our doors to our newest cohort and welcome back our other students after their summer break.

We are also proud to let you know that we've received full approval from the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) for our new Nursing courses designed to support the NHS, ahead of opening a bespoke building in Autumn 2023.

As well as celebrating news of our new courses we also have reason to jump up and down after being ranked 2nd in the UK for Journalism and 9th in the UK for Law in the Guardian University Guide 2024.

Find out more on our news pages.

Alumni versus students sports matches

We are looking forward to having a number of alumni versus students' sports fixtures taking place on Saturday 28 October 2023 where we will welcome back graduates to take on our current teams.

Matches on the day include Badminton, Netball, Men's Football, Women's Football and Men's Rugby Union.

Spectators are very welcome to come along on the day, the Student Bar will be open from 12.00pm.

Please note fixtures are subject to change so do keep looking at the events page for any updates.

Remembering Matthew

On Wednesday 6 September we hosted our annual Cricket Match to remember former student Matthew Huggett.

It was a great match where (as usual) the Lions Alumni Team defeated the staff team. It was brilliant to see Dean Naidoo (former Journalism lecturer) return, as he used to teach Matthew and started this proud tradition. Read more.

GradSkills

Leeds Trinity is the lead partner on the GradSkills project, which is funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

We have a target of training around 800 graduates living in the region to enable them to find highly skilled employment and boost the economy.

Participants are provided with the opportunity to engage with employers, network with other like-minded graduates, and work with a careers coach to put them in the best position to gain graduate employment in the region. Find out more.

Beyond the Dark Clouds

The second half of Leeds Trinity University’s online catholic lecture series ‘Beyond the Dark Clouds’ is now underway, with three to take place during October.

Featuring internal and external guest speakers, the series has been curated with the University’s Catholic values in mind, with an aim of promoting the values of human dignity, the common good and solidarity.

More information and booking links can be found via the University’s Eventbrite page.

Featured alumni – Lee Gormley

This month we had the pleasure of catching up with Leeds Trinity University alumnus Lee Gormley (Sports Journalism, 2013) who is a professional Boxer, winning his first two pro fights recently.

As well as being a professional Boxer Lee is also Boxing Content and Social Specialist at BOXRAW. Lee benefitted greatly from the course and can put in to practice what he learnt every day: "The Sports Journalism degree I gained at Leeds Trinity was very useful for opening doors into the industry. Now I work for the biggest boxing brand in the world, which is something I'm proud of."

We'll certainly be cheering on Lee for his future fights and following his career. Read Lee's alumni profile.

Working in tech or legal?

You will know better than anyone that we practice what we preach when we talk about being a career led University. We are currently looking to further strengthen the way we work with business and employers through the development of key strategic partnerships with organisations from the sectors of technology and law.

Whether you work for a business in one of these sectors or you are part of an in-house team we would be interested in hearing from you. Please email Charlotte Rainey for more information.
