Race Commission

Head of Early Careers and Apprenticeships for Coca Cola, Sharon Blyfield, will Chair the new Race Commission. With a similar mechanism to the Gender Commission, it will look at action that can be taken to improve the participation and achievement of people of colour in apprenticeships. 

 

Care Experienced Paper

January will see the publication of the EEQ Care Experienced Paper. It’s a vital piece of work offering action that must be taken to ensure care experienced people can access Scottish Apprenticeships.  We’ll send you updates when the publication is live.

A two-part special on Scotland’s skills system was published by Holyrood magazine in November. Anthony Burns, ACS Advanced Clothing Solutions COO and SAAB member offered his insights. Latest on review of skills delivery landscape 

Minister for Higher and Further Education Graeme Dey gave an update on post-school reform to parliament on 5 December. Although no major announcements were made on reform, with SAAB’s gender commission work mentioned as part of the discussion. You can watch the full statement via Scottish Parliament’s YouTube channel. 

Apprenticeship news in brief: 

  • Latest Modern Apprenticeship figures were published on 7 November covering new starts and completion rates.  

  • Skills Development Scotland published a notice on Public Contracts Scotland to invite bids from Learning Providers and Employers for starts for the Modern Apprenticeship programme from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025.   Deadline for submission of the tender documents via Public Contracts Scotland is 12 noon on the 8 January 2024.  

  • Young Shetlanders had the chance to experience an apprenticeship in a project aimed at tackling gender stereotypes.  

  • CIPD calls for a reform in the Apprenticeship Levy to boost employer investment in training and skills development with the publication of its ‘Devolution and Evolution in skills policy’ paper. 

  • The finalists for the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards have been revealed.
