February 2022 WelcomeWelcome to the new year. We hope you had some time to relax and unwind and more importantly, time with a good read. This month we celebrate our love of libraries, our staff share their favourite reads and find out why one of our long-term volunteers loves working at the library. Show the loveMonday 14 February is officially Library Lovers' Day but we value our libraries so much we are going to celebrate all month. This year’s theme is “Show the love” so we began by asking staff if they have a favourite romance novel, a love poem, or a love quote or just recommend a book they love. And now it’s your turn! We would also love you to share with us what you love about the library. Why do you visit the library? “This year, my library helped me…” Take a photo of yourself in the library and post it on your socials tag us @CoffsHarbourLibraries and #LibraryLoversDay or go old-school and use one of the ‘Show your love’ slips available at your library. Staff faves…Beautiful World, Where are you by Sally Rooney. This book touched me and lives on in its readers. The book itself contains that beautiful world so yearned for. It’s contemporary literary fiction, delicately and lovingly written. “The person, be it gentleman or lady, who has not pleasure in a good novel, must be intolerably stupid.” I’m putting in a pitch for the Local Studies Collection. I couldn’t do my job without all the wonderful local publications – by groups and individuals – that have been kept and cared for. It is full of unexpected information and stories and has been invaluable for me in gaining an appreciation of the fine grain of local history. “I came across Atlas of the Heart by Brene Brown and loved it. It explores 87 human emotions and experiences. The book has an attractive layout and is easy to start reading from anywhere. I loved it so much that gifted it to someone as a Christmas present.“ I LOVE the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. I’m a romantic at heart and I love the history, the passion and the adventure in this wonderful series. My favourite book is always the one I am reading. "I love the library, There are wonders and worlds in there, waiting for explorers.” Do you wish you read more?As a library, we are here to encourage and instil a love of reading and knowledge in everyone. Books clubs are also great for this and connect us with others, provide new perspectives and create conversations. We could go on and on about the benefits of reading and book clubs but we would really love to know… Are you a member of a book club? What is your club reading at the moment? Tag us @CoffsHarbourLibraries and #LibraryLoversDay on Facebook and we can share your story. Want to join a book club but having to buy the books is a barrier for you? Join your local library, you can borrow books and audiobooks for free. Have you read “The Grandest Bookshop in the World”?Meet Amelia Mellor, the author of The Grandest Bookshop in the World, online in conversation with State Library of NSW Curator Sarah Morley on Wednesday 2 February 2022 at 6:30 pm. Your library branches remain open for all and there are lots of great resources online too. Please follow our Facebook page and keep an eye on our library website for further updates regarding these programs. We thank you for your understanding. Did you know? Volunteer snapshotVolunteers are ambassadors for the library and help make our library services even better by extending the programs and services that we provide to our communities. Did you know that Carol has volunteered at Coffs Harbour Libraries for 28 years? She has seen lots of changes and helped out at a range of activities over the years, and still enjoys coming in to volunteer because she loves the library. She likes the people she has met and the friendships she has developed over the years and wants to keep at it for as long as she can. Carol is an avid reader, and one of the perks she most enjoys about volunteering is seeing all the new books and resources that have been purchased arrive. This has helped her discover more authors and read more widely. Carol doesn’t have a favourite book, she reads almost everything!!
