Shanelle Haile ‘23 PhD Selected as New Alumni Trustee

Newly minted graduate Shanelle Haile defended her dissertation this summer, will receive her degree this October, and was selected as New Alumni Trustee by the Corporation in the Spring. She’s also starting a new job in Boston next month. It’s been a very busy year for Haile, who is exceptionally modest about everything she’s accomplished.

“I'm excited to start my role as a Trustee, especially at a time when the university is emphasizing academic excellence and a strong commitment to diversity, while also following the law. These are key elements in fulfilling Brown's mission, and I fully support them,” says Haile. Read more.

 

Meet the 2023-2024 Graduate Student Fulbright Recipients

Phoebe Labat, Doctoral Candidate in History
Location: Aix-en-Provence, France

A fourth year doctoral candidate in History, Phoebe Labat will spend the academic year in the French city of Aix-en-Provence, which is home to the Archives Nationales D'outre-Mer (ANOM), France's overseas archives. Her dissertation work focuses on the social, economic, and political effects of hurricanes and earthquakes in the French Caribbean, Louisiana, and New France (Canada) between 1623 and 1843. Owen Manahan ’23 MPA, MPH
Location: Puebla City, Mexico

Recent graduate Owen Manahan is working as an English Teaching Assistant (ETA) with children in grades 4-6 in Puebla City, Mexico. He was drawn to the Fulbright opportunity based on his interest in both public health and education. Through his master’s coursework at Brown, he developed an interest in improving coordination between health systems and public school districts. Read more.

Hong Receives National Institute of Social Sciences Dissertation Grant

Announced in late summer, Ji Soo Hong was one of five students selected for the National Institute of Social Sciences (NISS) Dissertation Grant. Hong is a doctoral candidate in History studying the economic and environmental history of the USSR as well as the history of U.S.-Soviet relations. 

“The NISS award helped me to see the significance of reaching out to a wider audience beyond my own field and sharpening my research questions through interdisciplinary conversations,” says Hong. Read more.

Nussenzweig Awarded Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship 

Pursuing research in the field of precision oncology, medical student Samuel Nussenzweig was recently awarded the prestigious Dolores Zohrab Liebmann Fellowship for the current academic year.

Nussenzweig is a third year medical student at Brown. He is from the Washington D.C. area and came to Brown after completing his undergraduate degree at Columbia University in biological sciences and spending two years at Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center in the Department of Thoracic Surgery. Partner Spotlight: Chris Gilbody, Director, Graduate Financial Aid

Chris Gilbody administers financial aid for graduate students, ensuring the timely processing of financial aid applications and managing the overall counseling efforts and communication strategies to graduate programs from the Office of Financial Aid. He is also the point of contact for the Graduate School and the individual graduate programs and assists with financial education opportunities and workshops. Other News

Child Care Subsidy Applications Open for 2024

The subsidy helps graduate student parents with child care for children 0-6. Eligible graduate students can apply for up to $5,000/year, per child (up to 3 children), per household. Deadline: October 20, 2023. Learn more. 

Community Fellows

Community Fellows identify areas of need, and they propose initiatives that help contribute to the graduate experience at Brown. Community Fellows develop valuable leadership skills, while they offer programming that contributes to a sense of connectedness among graduate students.

Open to both master's & PhD students to work in the following topical areas: Race & Social Justice, Health & Wellness, Disability Community, International Community, Family Friendly Community, LGBTQ+ Community, Master’s Student Community, and U-FLI (Undocumented, First-Generation, and Low-Income) Community or propose one of your own. Deadline: October 20, 2023 by 5 pm. Apply now. 

Teaching at Teaching Intensive Institutions 2023 Program

The October 20, 2023 program features two panels: the first features senior faculty and administrators talking about what defines a teaching intensive and what makes it special, while the second features early-career faculty who will share their experiences getting and starting their careers. There is no cost for Brown graduate students to attend. Learn more and register.

Fall Covid-19 Appointment Extensions

Eligible students who are currently in their last funded term should apply through UFunds (under “COVID-19 Appointment Extensions - Fall 2023 Application Cycle”). Students are encouraged to discuss this opportunity with their DGS, Dissertation Committee, and Dissertation Advisor before applying. The application will open on October 16 and close on November 13, 2023. Learn more.

In recognition of the impact that COVID-19 and the public health response to it have had on students' abilities to complete their dissertations, Brown University created a COVID-19 Appointment Extension application process for students who were in years 3, 4, or 5 during Spring 2020. In 2022, an additional process was also created for students who were in year 2 during spring 2020.

Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is excited to announce a new partnership with TimelyCare, a student-centered platform designed to provide Brown students with on-demand access to mental health care from a diverse, culturally competent provider network.
