Header ImageThe header image for this issue is from The Landmark Trust [Alliance member] National Lottery Heritage Funded project at Calverley Old Hall. The Landmark Trust have recently finished their Sector-based Work Academy Programme (SWAP) at Calverley Old Hall. The Calverley restoration project will transform this medieval building from a ruin into a self-catering holiday home sleeping 10 people. The SWAP was the first major activity of the accompanying funded Activity Plan, which will encompass plenty of traditional craft training opportunities and activities and interpretation of the site for local communities. The SWAP invited 12 people, most actively looking for employment and referred by local Job Centres, to take part in 6-weeks of training in traditional craft skills including lime plastering, joinery, stone work and leaded lights. Two of the participants were offered, and have accepted, apprenticeship roles – one in joinery and one in brick work. Both will spend the majority of their 2 year long apprenticeships based at Calverley Old Hall working on the restoration of the building. Have you been forwarded this email? CEO Summer ProgressOur Chief Executive Lizzie Glithero-West has been out visiting Alliance Members in the North of England (last week) and the South (this week). Lizzie then went on to meet the team at Halifax’s iconic The Piece Hall [Alliance member] and to catch up with another of our newest members, Holmfirth Civic Hall Community. Take a look here for an extended visual tour of both places and the work they’re doing. Lizzie also headed North West into Manchester to see the National Trust’s [Alliance member] newly opened Castlefield Viaduct, a high-line garden in one of the least green urban post-industrial areas and visited shadow Heritage Minister Jeff Smith for a conversation about heritage advocacy priorities for The Heritage Alliance. This week, Lizzie has visited the Weald & Downland Museum [Alliance member], exploring how they bring historic places to life through an exciting education offer and practising traditional skills. Most recently, Lizzie experienced the Bluebell Railway with colleagues from the Heritage Railway Association [Alliance member] - the UK trade body supporting heritage railways, tramways and railway preservation groups. These examples were shared at the start of the month on HEF's social media channels. They showcase how historic buildings can be highly energy efficient and demonstrate how heritage organisations are taking positive action on climate change.
