In partnership with the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP) we’re replacing the sheet pile wall at Mordialloc Creek. Once complete, the new sheet pile wall will help to prevent erosion and support the existing wave baffle structure along the creek entrance. The new sheet pile wall is designed to be durable and resilient. What we're doingThe entrance to Mordialloc Creek is lined with wave baffle structures, designed to reduce the wave action within the creek. These extend for approximately 100 metres on both sides of the entrance. Originally built in the 1990s, replacement wave baffles were installed in 2017 in front of the sheet pile walls. Repairs to the sheet pile walls were also undertaken at this time including pouring concrete behind the walls to close holes. Despite these repairs, recent inspections revealed rapid deterioration of the infrastructure. Working with consultants Cardno Pty Ltd, we have assessed the current condition of the creek wall infrastructure and factored in future sea level rise to determine a recommended approach to mitigate wave impacts at the entrance to Mordialloc Creek. Following this assessment, in March 2022 we commenced construction of new coastal infrastructure to help reduce the natural impacts of coastal erosion, while ensuring safe boating access is retained in the creek. This includes replacement of a 175-metre section on the southern side of the creek entrance which is now complete and a 140-metre section of the sheet pile wall on the northern side. Making progressOn ground works on the southern side kicked off in March 2022 and after months of challenging weather conditions, works on this side of the creek are now complete. The next step has been to establish a works compound on the northern side of the creek, near the entrance to Mordialloc Pier to allow works on the northern section to begin. The project was due for completion late 2022 but as a result of challenging storm and tidal conditions during winter 2022, the project is now anticipated to conclude in autumn 2023. Project timeline

Image – map showing access when visiting Mordialloc Creek and Mordialloc Pier. Enjoying the area safelyPlease respect fenced closure areas and follow on-site signage directions. These closed areas are in place to keep visitors safe when visiting the area. The works are relatively non-intrusive, however if you’re visiting the site during normal construction hours, you may experience noise and slight vibrations. Construction impacts and closuresWe’re seeking to minimise impacts and inconvenience where possible and appreciate your patience as we deliver this important project. While works are underway please be aware of the following: Carparking - expect some reduced carpark access to the pier end of Pier Road during the next stage of works as a portion of this area is required for the construction compound, this will affect approximately 20 carparks which will be unavailable. Fishing access – there’s currently no access to the catwalk (wave baffle) on the northern side of Mordialloc Creek. Fishers can access and use the northern side of Mordialloc Pier but should pull lines in as vessels approach. Pedestrian access – there’s no access available to the boardwalk along the northern side of Mordialloc Creek entrance. Pedestrians can access Mordialloc Pier using an alternative path from the carpark. Mordialloc Pier, the foreshore trail and creek side trail remain open.
