AHDB Signet Breeding News
Welcome...

Happy New Year to you all, there are lots of updates to share with you. 2021 was incredibly busy, with the completion of major research associated with our maternal sheep breeds as part of the AHDB/CIEL funded project “EWEBenefit”, the publication of the Sheep Breed Survey and the release of the latest RamCompare results.

We launched a new performance recording initiative with the Sussex Cattle Society and developed new integrated flockbook services with the Romney and Roussin Breed Societies.
We also introduced new ultrasound scanning software to the industry and saw the CT scanning service back on the road again.

I also want to share with you the importance of the Shape the Future vote this spring, and explain the impact this will have on genetic research and Signet recording fees. We live in changing times and never more so than for Signet, as AHDB set out to engage with levy payers to have their say and shape our work and areas of priority. Ultimately it will be levy payers that help guide what we deliver over the next five years, influencing the budget that we have to spend on genetic research and the fees that breeders pay Signet for the services they receive.

I would strongly encourage you to have your say. Register here to get involved.

AHDB is engaging with levy payers this spring to talk about how their levy is invested. The vote will influence how funds are split between marketing and research, including genetic research to enhance the services that Signet provides and subsidising the fees paid by ram breeders for recording and scanning services.

Please note: AHDB only collects a beef and lamb levy from English levy payers. In the case of livestock born in Wales and Scotland, but slaughtered in England, the processor (i.e. the abattoir) will be eligible to vote, but not the farm that bred these animals if the farm is not located in England. It is worth highlighting that levy derived from cross-border movement to slaughter is repaid to the country where the economic value was created, so this levy spend does directly benefit producers in those countries where the animal was bred.
