About the Vivarium: Chapman University’s Office of Research is responsible for overseeing all live, vertebrate animal research. The Rinker Health Science Campus Vivarium opened in 2016 and includes 7,000 square feet of OLAW-Assured rodent vivarium facilities. Research and teaching activities supported by the Office of Research include pharmacological research, infectious disease, cancer biology, nutrition and metabolism studies, orthopedic research, therapeutics, toxicology, and teaching activities to support a diverse program of learning. The Vivarium exists to provide state-of-art care and support for the animal models component of these studies. All researchers can work closely with the Office of Research and our Vivarium Manager to discuss potential projects, navigate logistics, and obtain support for the exciting research happening at Chapman University! Kimberly Suh is the Vivarium Manager at Chapman University since July 2020. She graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science, specialization in Laboratory Animals, and has previously worked for UC Davis, USC, and Loma Linda in animal research facilities. Kimberly manages the general operation of the animal research facilities at Chapman University and works closely with researchers. She is pursuing her Master of Business Administration and is seeking to become a Certified Manager of Animal Resources. Kimberly is passionate about her work, enjoys mentoring others interested in the industry, and is available to assist with any questions about animal research. ![]() ![]() Sarah Chavez is a Lab Animal Care Technician at Chapman University since January 2021. She has a B.S in Animal Science from UC Davis, with a specialization in Companion and Captive Animals and a minor in Wildlife, Fish, and Conservation Biology. Sarah has experience working with rodents, exotic felines, freshwater fish, livestock, and zoo animals, and is interested in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation. As Lab Animal Care Technician, she provides support for husbandry and care operations, as well as management plans. In her free time, she volunteers at Pacific Marine Mammal Center, rescuing and rehabilitating sea lions and seals. New Team Member! Julia Muniz, Part-Time Animal Care Technician, recently graduated from Chapman University, Class of 2022, with a Bachelor’s in Biological Sciences and emphasis in Molecular Biology. She has previous experience working with our team at the vivarium as an undergraduate student worker. Outside of the vivarium, she is working full time as a lab technician at a veterinary health diagnostics lab and is currently applying for veterinary school for Fall 2024 admission. We are excited to bring Julia back onto our team! ![]() ![]() New Team Member! Cindy Nguyen, Part-Time Animal Care Technician, attended Platt College Anaheim where she earned her Associate’s degree in Veterinary Technology. She started as a kennel and veterinary assistant at a general practice for 3 years with experience in companion animals, including birds. As of 2022, she became licensed as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) and has gone on to also work at an ophthalmology specialty animal hospital. She has a passion for exploring and diversifying her experience in veterinary medicine. Outside of the facility, you can catch Cindy reading books, thrifting knick-knacks, or checking off her bucket list experiences. Single-PI applications only. Up to $250,000 Direct Costs per year for up to 5 years. Limit 2 applications per institution.
