Last week we started work on one of the most challenging parts of the project - the Heathcote River drilling programme, which involves drilling a tunnel under the Heathcote River and part of Ferry Road using a technique called horizontal directional drilling. Once complete, we need to close off part of Ferry Road to pull a 535-metre section of pre-welded pipeline back through the hole. We're planning to do this from 8pm Saturday 29 February - 10am Sunday 29 March in a single night shift to minimise disruption. On behalf of the team, thanks for your patience while we complete this work. Heathcote River drilling underwayLast week our contractors started the Heathcote River drilling programme. Everything is going well so far and we're expecting drilling to be complete this week, ready for the next stage. Once the hole has been established, we'll pull through the 535-metre section of wastewater pipeline. This will connect the Heathcote Valley pipeline to the Alport Place pump station. This diagram shows the 535-metre tunnel that is being drilled under the Heathcote River. What is horizontal directional drillingHorizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) is a method of installing underground pipelines, cables and service conduit through trenchless methods. It involves the use of a directional drilling machine, and associated attachments, to accurately drill along the chosen bore path and pull back the required pipe. This specialist directional drilling rig is the only one of its kind in New Zealand. The rig started its drilling programme on Tuesday. Ferry Road closure planned for 29 February - 1 MarchOnce the drilling programme is complete, we will need to close part of Ferry Road to give our team a place to work while they pull a single 535-metre section of pre-welded wastewater pipeline through the hole. The westbound lane of Ferry Road will be closed from Rutherford Street to the Ferry Road roundabout, with clear detours in place. The eastbound lane will remain open and we'll have traffic management and teams on the ground to show you where to go. We plan to complete this work overnight during a single 14-hour shift to minimise disruption to residents, local businesses and general traffic. The road closure is currently planned to start from 8pm Saturday 29 February until 10am Sunday 1 March. However, we may need to move the Ferry Road closure to later in the week if the drilling programme runs overtime, or if we run into challenges with the pipe pull. We'll let you know if these dates change and there will be clear traffic management in place. We're working closely with Transport for Christchurch, who will be sharing real-time traffic updates online. This map shows where the tunnel will be drilled and the new wastewater pipeline installed. Ferry Road DetoursThe westbound lane of Ferry Road, from the Ferry Road, Dyers Road & Tunnel Road (SH 74) roundabout to the intersection of Rutherford Street and Palinurus Road, will be closed from 8pm Saturday 29 February until 10am Sunday 1 March. The following detours apply: Mt Pleasant / SumnerIf your destination is Ferry Road, use Main Road to Humphreys Road to Linwood Avenue and then onto Hargood Street. If your destination is elsewhere in the City, use Main Road to Humphreys Road and then onto Linwood Avenue. Use the reverse to head back to Mt Pleasant / Sumner Lyttelton / Heathcote ValleyIf your destination is Ferry Rd, use Tunnel Road (SH 74) to the Ferry Road / Dyers Road Roundabout and then to Dyers Road and then Linwood Avenue to Hargood Street and back to Ferry Road. If your destination is elsewhere in the City, use Tunnel Road (SH 74) to the Ferry Road / Dyers Road Roundabout and then to Dyers Road and then onto Linwood Avenue. Or consider using Port Hills Road (SH 76) . Use the reverse to head back to Lyttelton / Heathcote Valley Work continues around the harbourOur teams are busy around the harbour, either building, testing and commissioning pump stations or installing parts of the new wastewater network. What are we doing at Simeon Quay? We’ve put up the wall panels for the pump station and completed the final concrete pour for the floor slab, connecting the walls to the floor. Currently, the internal steel support structure for the Gantry is being installed. This will be followed in late February by the installation of the Gantry Crane. What’s up next?Next month we’ll begin placement of the roof panels before constructing formwork and pouring the topping slab on the roof. Following this, we will begin the internal fit out of the building along with other site works.
