Engaging with banks in Nigeria as a customer can be a painful experience – even at the best of times. It was particularly bad earlier this year. It took me three hours to collect just N2,000 (about US$4.34) from a bank - the most that each person was allowed to take out per day at the time. This was at the height of a severe cash crunch caused by the botched withdrawal of old Naira notes and their replacement with new ones. As Iwa Salami explains, the crisis triggered by the currency swap was a perfect opportunity for Nigeria to boost the uptake of digital financial services. But it missed the moment. Had Nigeria appreciated the value of digital finance,
particularly mobile money, the impact of the crisis would not have been as painful.
Africa is the only continent that has never seen a mass extinction of its megafauna - large mammals like elephants, hippos and rhinos. Ara Monadjem argues that this makes it the ideal place for studying ecological interactions and dynamics, especially those between large and small mammals and the land they occupied. This is because they would have been here before our species, Homo sapiens, came to dominate all landscapes on all continents.
Finally, to mark World Press Freedom Day today, we’ve shared a few pieces from our archives in this newsletter.
