We'll meet at the Bonanza Flat Trailhead at 3 p.m. on August 28th. After a short ceremony, we'll head out to ride, hike, and experience this new trail. Representatives from Mountain Trails Foundation, Park City Municipal, and Utah Open Lands will be present to share their vision and the joy of success. The Backstory... Last week, Mountain Trails Foundation completed the Bonanza Loop Trail, a key component of the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area’s Trails Masterplan. This long-awaited, high-alpine, multi-use trail was built on the 1500-acre Bonanza Flat Conservation Area, which is managed by Utah Open Lands. The trail has been five years in the making, required the construction of three bridges to protect watershed, and this specific trail alignment is the result of intensive study and approval by the Utah Open Lands conservation team. This trail is a shining example of how collaboration between nonprofits benefits the public and the ecosystem. The five-mile-long trail sits at about 9000’ elevation near the top of Guardsman Pass and is accessed from the Bonanza Flat Trailhead, just below Empire Pass. The trail is an intermediate, (although high-altitude!) flowy, beautiful and quiet trail. It is authorized for non-motorized recreation only, including mountain biking and hiking/trail running, from July 1st through October 1st, annually. Trail closures need to be adhered to in order to safeguard the conservation of the species that call Bonanza Flat home. Please help Utah Open Lands in safeguarding the ecosystem by being responsible trail users. The Bonanza Loop Trail is a multi-use trail that is directional counterclockwise for mountain bikes and recommended clockwise for hikers. Dogs are not allowed on this trail. Woof… As wildlife is frequent in this area, and as a courtesy to other trail users, we strongly discourage the use of dual earbuds, and instead, encourage trail users to give attention to everything Bonanza Loop has to offer! If you’re lucky enough to spot wildlife, be wise and stay back. As part of the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area Trails Masterplan, a spaghetti-bowl of social trails, which were detrimental to the natural flora and fauna, were decommissioned. The Bonanza Loop Trail was built to allow public access to the conservation area on a purpose-built and eco-friendly trail. Please respect Mother Nature and the neighbors by staying on the trail. The use of this land for recreation is a considerable privilege – let’s all behave sensibly and preserve that privilege. For more information on trail etiquette required in the Bonanza Flat Conservation Area, please visit Utah Open Lands at: https://www.utahopenlands.org/copy-of-leave-it-loved-bonanza-2 As trailhead parking in Bonanza Flat is intentionally limited to control congestion, we advise using the bike friendly Transit to Trails shuttle, rather than driving to Bonanza Flat.
