Ilam wastewater upgrade progressing

The Ilam Wastewater Upgrade, to improve wastewater infrastructure along Clyde, Creyke and Maidstone roads, is well underway.

Stage One update

The first stage of work is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Works include:

• Pumping water from below the ground to allow for trenching and excavation works
• Trenching and excavation works
• Installation of new pipes
• Re-sealing the road where trenching and excavation was carried out

Clyde Road

The footpath around University Drive is now open, which will be helpful for students who have their exams looming. Work to open access for vehicle traffic to University Drive is still on-going but getting closer.

Routine pipe laying and manhole construction is progressing well. A ‘collector’ pipe is being laid above the large wastewater pipe that has already been installed around University Drive.

The work around University Drive is one of the deepest parts of the upgrade, with some trenches over 4 metres deep due to the wastewater pipe being gravity feed. The picture below is of the sheet piling around the University Drive manhole.

Creyke Road

The contractor team continue to lay lateral pipes, which connect to the main wastewater pipe they are also laying and are constructing and connecting new manholes. This work is ongoing as they work west down Creyke Road.

Traffic management

There is traffic management in place while the work is being completed, including shoulder and lane closures, one-way systems and the temporary removal of on-street parking. Please follow signage and keep an eye out for changes in traffic management.
