In this role, she will lead and coordinate efforts for the BaCE program, a strategic priority in Goal 4 of WSU Vancouver's 2021 – 2026 Strategic Plan. For the last 12 years, Hardekopf served as director of admissions for various career and technical schools. Before that, she performed and taught the arts, especially in underserved Phoenix school districts, for more than a decade. Hardekopf’s mission, whether through instruction or leadership, has been to empower individuals to increase community success. She has extended her impact by volunteering at community agencies to teach a variety of uplifting topics from cultural competency and urban gardening, to mentoring youth for academic, social and professional success. Hardekopf’s undergraduate and graduate work firmly rooted her in rhetoric, identity and performance. Her graduate thesis, “Under My Skin,” highlighted the intersectionality of gender, race and economic identities attributed to women’s hair, and a portion of it was presented at the National Communication Association Conference. Hardekopf and her family are eager to make the Pacific Northwest the place they call home, and she looks forward to continuing the success of WSU Vancouver's mission to create a safe, welcoming campus. Taco Bell awards $25K scholarship to WSU med studentWSU M3 medical student Joel Bervell did not think agreeing to be filmed as he went about his business at the Vancouver Clinic Tech Center on April 18 was unusual. He’s a TikTok star, and not shy about a video camera. What was unusual, was being led to a small group of people gathered to celebrate. In that moment, Bervell learned he was the recipient of a 2022 Live Más Scholarship, a $25,000 award from the Taco Bell Foundation. Since 1992, the Taco Bell Foundation has awarded more than $110 million in Live Más Scholarships and grants to youth-serving nonprofit organizations focused on education and career readiness. Bervell has more than 350,000 followers on his social media channels. There he talks about medical myths and health care disparities. He says his goal is to increase the number of minority doctors by serving as a role model. Watch Bervell’s inspirational video to learn more about him. Winners of the Live Más Scholarship boldly pursue their dreams—and inspire others to do the same. Congratulations, Joel Bervell!
