Congratulations to College of Education, Psychology and Social Work PhD candidate Emilea Mysko who has received the inaugural Enterprise PhD Scholarship with the Sammy D Foundation, to research the nuanced role of parents as role models for children and using youth sports as the social setting for this modelling. Congratulations to marine biologist PhD student, Elise Tuuri for being named the 2022 SARDI Science Bursary for Women. Elise is halfway through a PhD in biological oceanography, with her research focusing on the growing issue of microplastics accumulating in the oceans. Her research will be the first to review how microplastics enter the marine food web through zooplankton in Australia. Read more >

STAYING WELL DURING YOUR PHD WORKSHOP

Undertaking a PhD is both an exciting and challenging experience. It can be an emotional roller-coaster. The excitement of working on something you care about, exploring new ideas and making a contribution to knowledge. The challenges of feeling isolated and overwhelmed, dealing with setbacks, uncertainty, conflict and loss of motivation. Inevitably over the course of your PhD you will experience times when things aren’t going so well. This workshop on Tuesday 9 August (2pm-4pm, online) draws on evidence-based strategies to help YOU stay well during your PhD. Register here >

Have you recently commenced at Flinders? 3MT SEMI FINAL

Flinders University 3MT Competition is nearing the semi finals! We have had over 30 PhD students taking part in the competition, and the top two from each college will go through to the semi-final held in August. All HDR students are strongly encouraged to come support their peers, learn about the amazing research being conducted around the university, and get some pointers on how to effectively communicate their research impact in less than three minutes. Come and cheer on your fellow PhD students on Friday 26 August (2pm-4pm) either online or in person in the Health Sciences Lecture Theatre Complex 1.01. Read more >

 
 

FREE ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING

Flinders is offering this sought-after accreditation to our students for free. One in five Australian adults experiences a mental health problem and by educating ourselves we can all play our part in responding to this community need. Mental Health First Aid is the help provided to a person experiencing a mental health problem. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved. This training will focus on equipping you help you to understand and help others.  Sessions are held in September (13 and 14), October (4, 5, 11, 12) and November (1, 2, 15).  Read more >

 

SAFE AND SECURE DATA STORAGE FOR HDR STUDENTS

Do you need access to safe and secure data storage? As part of an ambitious drive to improve the accessibility and awareness of research data storage at Flinders, we have delivered a new way to make sure that you have enough storage for your research data. The new request form gathers additional information regarding the needs of the researcher in relation to retention, security and ownership of the research data.  The benefit is that it will ensure your data is well taken care of. HDR students are able to request their own 50GB data storage here.  Additional information is available here.

 

PLAYFORD TRUST SCHOLARSHIPS - NOW OPEN

Playford Trust scholarships and awards aim to help students make the most of their studies, achieve their potential and contribute to South Australia’s knowledge, skills and research base. The first round of university scholarships for 2023 are now open and applications will close on 16 September. Applications for more than 40 additional university scholarships- from first year through to PhD – will open on 13 October and in most cases close on 20 January. Read more >

(AVAILABLE IN 24 LANGUAGES!)

Finding good self-help materials written in multiple languages can be a challenge. This illustrated guide from the World Health Organisation on managing stress is available in 24 languages and is free. In it you’ll learn evidence-based stress management tools and provides some really actionable and evidence-based stress management strategies: grounding, values, kindness, acceptance and defusion.
