Can someone explain to me the difference between "Grant Permission to Register" and "Review Complete"?

We have heard from several advisers who are confused about the difference between "Grant Permission to Register" and "Review Complete."

"Grant Permission to Register" happens at the beginning of each advising & registration period and allows the student to register for courses when the registration period opens, while "Review Complete" comes at the end of that advising period and indicates you are approving the student's final schedule. Think of the two as the bookends of your job as an adviser.

Here's how it works using the upcoming advising and registration period:

November 2019 - After meeting with your advisees and approving their course selections for Spring Semester 2020, you will click on "Grant Permission to Register."

January 2020 - Sometime during the first two weeks of Spring Semester 2020, you will meet again with your advisees, review their FINAL schedules and if you approve, you will click "Review Complete."

Note: Remember, if you don't properly click the "Grant Permission to Register," your advisees will not be able to register for classes when their online registration period opens the week of November 18. Students are assigned registration appointments based on seniority so if possible, meet with seniors and juniors first, then begin advising sophomores and first-years.

Review the October 24 INSIGHTS for steps (including screenshots) on how to use "Grant Permission to Register."  More information can be found at "Instruction Manual for Advising & Registration."

If you have questions, please email registrar@barnard.edu.

You may have noticed on your advisees list, the students have zero registered credits. This is not an error because the system has now switched over to display information for Spring 2020.

You may also see on your advisees’ Student Planning page there are billing credits listed as a “course”.  This isn't new, but now there are no credits associated with it. Hopefully this will reduce student and adviser confusion about the students’ actual credit total for the semester. As in the past, students can either drop it themselves once they've registered for actual classes or the Registrar’s Office will drop it for them at a later point. Here's how it looks:

Helpful Advising Resources

Academic departments are holding program planning meetings for students who may be interested in a major in the department. Students learn about the different major options in the department, meet faculty members, find out about upcoming spring courses, and more!  Please refer to this link for Program Planning Meetings: Program Planning Mtgs.
