What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - February

We are not all artists, but we are all creative. Creativity
fosters innovation, adaptability, well-being, communication, and problem-solving, all of which are essential for a well-functioning society. Last Friday, we celebrated the opening of "Family Artistree" at the Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery. This exhibition features the works of 23 members of an extended family from New Zealand, Australia, the UK, and Canada, exploring creativity across both the visual arts and science. It
includes over 100 works ranging from paintings and a giant whimsical lantern to projects examining the influence of art on neuroscience to replicating the water shedding properties of butterfly wings, to name but a few. Don't miss it – on show until February 28th. Also showing at Central Stories is "The Ghosts Between Us" an artistic dialogue between mother and son, Katie Robinson and Joel Potter, exploring Central Otago’s
landscapes through painting and photography. Katie, a painter with a PhD in physical sciences, and Joel, a photographer known for both analog and digital techniques, highlight personal experiences and connections to familiar spaces. The school holidays are now over, but if you are looking for something to occupy the kids in the weekends, get to one of our five museums and pick up a Hunt for History Passport. This passport invites
children under 12 to explore the Central Museums' "100 Objects" exhibition in a fun and engaging way. From the excitement of buried treasure to the intrigue of a daring robbery—and even a 130-year-old wedding cake—the exhibition showcases 100 must-see items from the collection. These objects, held by five public museums across Central Otago, tell important stories about the district's rich history, creating a heritage trail of discovery. Passport activities are designed around these fascinating objects. Young participants can complete four fun activities at each museum to earn a stamp in their passport. Collect stamps from all five museums to win fantastic prizes. Passports are now available for collection from the five participating museums. Make sure you like the Museums of Central Otago Facebook page to stay up to date. The Cromwell Early Learning Centre is hosting a week-long exhibition of unique kākahu (cloaks) by Māori master weaver Rokahurihia Ngarimu-Cameron MNZM, opening on the 13th and
showing until the 20th from 8am - 5pm Daily. Koha (donations) are welcomed. There are many more wonderful arts events taking place in Central Otago and the surrounding areas this month. Scroll down to learn more.
