Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant update

Clarifier trial underway

The Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant is operating well and has adjusted to the winter conditions.

Our teams have been busy working in the background on a number of projects and have now started trialing the installation of walls that will make it possible to isolate the clarifiers. If the trial proves successful, full cutoff walls will be installed starting in late September.

These cutoff walls are a key preparatory step for critical repair works scheduled to begin in December/January. Once installed, they will enable faster and more efficient dewatering, helping to streamline the upcoming works.

We don’t expect the trial will impact operations at the plant over the next couple of weeks.

Hydrogen sulphide monitors being tested

We’ve collected all odour monitors from the community and around the plant and sent them off for routine calibration. With the ponds in stable winter mode and odour levels at their seasonal low, this is the most sensible time of year to complete the work.

Although this means we won’t have hydrogen sulphide data for the next few weeks, we expect to have the odour monitors back up and running in about three weeks.
