Te Kaha Surrounding Streets

Preparations underway for final road surfacing

It's been all hands on deck over the last month, with around 100 contractors working across the site.

Preparations are underway for the final layer of asphalt to be installed on Barbadoes Street, Tuam Street and Madras Street. This is the last high-impact phase of work in the project and will take place across April and May.

Asphalting starts on Barbadoes Street in early April, followed by Tuam Street and then Madras Street.

Check out how work is progressing and information on upcoming works below. For the most up to date information about what's happening on site, visit the Isaac Construction website.

Barbadoes Street, paving at the Lichfield and Cashel intersections
The new paving in the intersections along Barbadoes Street is almost finished and the final layer of asphalt in between each intersection will start being laid next month.

To get the job done as quick as possible, the resurfacing will take place day and night, with staged closures of Barbadoes Street between intersections during April. Noisy works like levelling out the road surface ahead of laying the asphalt will take place during the day to minimise disruption.

Tuam Street, looking east from the Madras Street intersection
Along Tuam Street, the kerb, rain gardens and cycle lane are now finished. New streetlighting has also been installed.

Paving will be laid at this intersection during April. The final layer of asphalt will then be added along Tuam Street between Madras Street and Barbadoes Street. While our contractors plan to carry out most of the work during weekends and overnight, when traffic volumes will be low, there will be some disruption in the area while the work is taking place.

Madras Street, looking south from the Hereford Street intersection
Work on the pavement and traffic signals in the Madras Street and Hereford Street intersection will finish up next week.

Work to install new underground communications services, and traffic light infrastructure at the corner of Cashel Street and Madras Street also finishes this week.

Cobblestones will be installed in the intersections along Madras Street, ahead of the final resurfacing taking place.

Madras Street, outside Ara
The footpath is being widened outside Ara and new stormwater pipes are being laid.

The new crossing outside Ara will soon be completed.

Lichfield Street, west of the stadium
The south side of Lichfield Street is finished. Street furniture, new street lighting and tram poles are also now in place.

The last section of paving is going in on the north side of Lichfield Street from Monday 7 April to Monday 21 April. A section of the road will be closed. Read the detour notice.

Contractors will be working in the Lichfield Street and Manchester Street intersection from Sunday 30 March to Wednesday 2 April to decommission the old watermain pipes. This will involve lane closures and night work. Read the detour notice.

The major works in Lichfield Street are on track to finish up by early May.

Ash Street
The wastewater infrastructure upgrades are complete and the last section of paving is going in along Ash Street this week. Read the detour notice.

Lichfield and Tuam Streets road layout changes
Two permanent road layout changes came into effect in March.

Lichfield Street is now two way between Fitzgerald Avenue and Barbadoes Street.

Tuam Street, between Fitzgerald Avenue and Barbadoes Street, is now one way moving east away from the stadium, making the entire length of Tuam Street eastbound within the central city.

Tuam Street and Fitzgerald Avenue intersection
From Monday 31 March to Monday 7 April, there will be no entry from Fitzgerald Avenue heading east onto Tuam Street while work is taking place on the island in the intersection. Read the detour notice.
