Click here February 2023 A Message from the Dean of the School of CommunicationCommunication Studies at Chapman University: Where Communication Meets Innovation Communication is a critical aspect of our daily lives and is vital to building strong relationships and navigating a rapidly changing world. At Chapman University, the Communication Studies program provides students with the knowledge and skills to excel in the field of communication and make a meaningful impact in the world. One of the unique aspects of the Communication Studies program at Chapman is the emphasis on innovation. Students are encouraged to think creatively about communication and how it can be used to solve problems and create positive change. This approach is reflected in the curriculum, which covers a range of topics from interpersonal communication and media studies to crisis communication and advocacy. I did not write the previous paragraphs. They are the product of ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) from the prompt: write a blog post for Communication Studies at Chapman University. These are only the first of six paragraphs ChatGPT produced. I did not include the rest of the post because, well, I want you to keep reading. ChatGPT has been in the news a lot lately. We’ve been told it can pass a bar exam, a medical licensing exam, and a core MBA exam at the Wharton School of Business and Economics. So, the story goes, all of us “knowledge workers” are supposed to be very worried. AI is coming for us. I encourage you to reread the ChatGPT product. It is not wrong. But it is really poor writing, especially in the genre of blog posts. You can see how that sort of result might pass a standardized exam, where the work is judged on content, not on style. But it certainly isn’t writing that invites you to continue reading. The core technology here is called Generative Pre-trained Transformer. It produces its results, roughly, by predicting what word or words (tokens in the technology jargon of language models) will come next in a stream of words. The prediction is based on “pre-training” on a vast body of writing found on the internet. For example, the system predicted that one possible way the fragment “Communication is a critical aspect of our daily lives and is key …” might be continued is with “to building strong relationships and navigating a rapidly changing world.” Of course, much more goes into this, including how the designers chose to train the system. But at the end of the day, ChatGPT mirrors what it has been trained to mirror. That suggests two things to me.
By the way, I asked the system to rewrite the essay in the style of Weird Al Yankovic. Enjoy, and you're welcome. Verse 1: Gather 'round folks, I got a story to tell About Communication Studies, at Chapman it excels From interpersonal to media, crisis to advocacy This program's got it all, a total compatibility Chorus: It's got creativity and innovation, and hands-on experience too The faculty's the best, they'll guide you through and through With a focus on diversity, Chapman's got it all In Communication Studies, you'll have a ball! Verse 2: [it doesn’t get better] I am pretty sure Weird Al is safe. I then asked it to tell me some Communication Studies jokes. Why did the Communication Studies student bring a ladder to their exam? So they could reach their high level of communication skills! Why did the Communication Studies student always carry a thesaurus around? Because they wanted to make sure they had a synonym for everything they said! Perhaps needing to be more specific, I asked it to tell me a funny joke about Comm Studies. Why did the Communication Studies major cross the road? To get to the other side of the message! I think all of us are safe … for now. Sincerely, M. Andrew Moshier, Ph.D. Dean, School of Communication Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Director of the Center for Excellence in Computation, Algebra and Topology Happy spring semester! Research SpotlightDr. Megan Vendemia, Dr. David DeAndrea (Ohio State University), and Ph.D. student Kyla Brathwaite (Ohio State University) explore an intersectional approach to investigate how women's racial identity may influence how they evaluate and are impacted by body-positive imagery of women on social media. Their findings not only advance the theoretical understanding of sexual objectification with more diverse depictions and broader sampling but also provide practical suggestions for advocates of the body-positive movement.Looking for Internships or Jobs? For up-to-date information on events, internships, and special announcements, join the School of Communication Slack page!
