From the MayorThis week we remembered the lives lost to family and domestic violence with a special commemoration at Cameron Park in Turramurra. We unveiled our second purple bench (the first is in St Ives) and planted a beautiful purple-flowering Tibouchina tree.
The international purple bench project began in Nova Scotia, Canada, in 2015 to mark the 25th anniversary of the murder of Barb Baillie by her husband. Since then, purple benches have appeared in public spaces around the world as a powerful symbol of remembrance. On average, one woman every 9 days is killed by a current or former partner in Australia. National Domestic Violence Remembrance Day is an opportunity for us as a community to stand with survivors and honour the lives lost. Council has partnered with DV Safe Phone, a registered charity that collects, repairs, and securely wipes old mobile phones, turning them into safe, unmonitored devices for people experiencing domestic violence. If you have a spare mobile phone you'd like to
donate you can drop them off at collection points at our libraries. Finally, I'd like to wish all the mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our community a very special Mother's Day. May you be celebrated and cherished by loved ones this weekend. Mayor Christine Kay
