A new study shows how machine learning could predict rare disastrous events, like earthquakes, pandemics, or rogue waves. Researchers from Brown and MIT suggest how scientists can circumvent the need for massive data sets to forecast extreme events with the combination of an advanced machine learning system and sequential sampling techniques.  Read more.

 

Extended: Research Achievement Awards nomination deadline

Brown recognizes outstanding research and scholarship through annual Research Achievement Awards. Nominations (via UFunds) for Early Career Awards and Distinguished Research Achievement Awards due 1/30/23, 9pm.

NIAAA Human Subjects Data Sharing revision
The purpose of this Notice is to revise and replace the current NIAAA language for Data Sharing requirements for all grant applications and awards that involve human subject research to align with the NIH Policy for Data Management and Sharing.

Annual Conflict of Interest Disclosure Cycle
The Annual COI disclosure cycle kicks off on February 9, 2023. Faculty and researchers disclose in InfoEd; staff disclose in Workday. Anyone required to submit an annual disclosure will receive an individual email with instructions.

New restrictions on semiconductors
The US government has tightened controls on semiconductors and related materials that are exported to/shared with China. If your research involves these and collaboration with China, Hong Kong or Macau, contact Brown's Export Control Team. 

Updated IRB priority review guidelines
The IRB/HRPP has updated its guidelines on how protocol reviews are prioritized and provided new information on how to request priority review for your submission.

Salary Limitation on NIH and AHRQ FY2023 Awards
NIH and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Salary Cap is now $212,100. See policy notice NOT-HS-23-005 and NOT-OD-23-056.

NSF-approved formats for the Biographical Sketch, effective January 30, 2023
NSF is providing a fillable PDF for use in preparation of the biographical sketch. This format will be available through October 22, 2023. Beginning October 23, 2023, use of SciENcv only will be required.

Dept of Energy reqs: submission Final Peer-Reviewed Accepted Manuscripts
A semi-annual reminder that recipients of SC funded awards, made or renewed on or after 10/1/14, must submit to DOE the final peer-reviewed accepted manuscript for any published journal article that is based on the research supported by the award.

Technology Innovations

Machine learning technology to prevent pipeline leaks
Dr. Srivastava and colleagues are developing a new machine learning technology that utilizes convolutional neural networks (CNN) to analyze ultrasound wave patterns in metal pipelines to locate cracks and prevent catastrophic events like gas explosions. 

Dr. Laiwalla to participate in Equalize Program 
Dr. Laiwalla has been accepted to the 2023 MedTech cohort of the 6-month Equalize Program, pairing women academic researchers with mentors in entrepreneurship across therapeutics, medical technologies, physical sciences, and digital tools sectors.

New patent awarded to Brown in Engineering 
A patent was recently awarded to Dr. Sherief Reda’s lab in the School of Engineering for new technology in deep neural networks (11,521,047). 

BTI staff featured in Tech Transfer Central article  
Neil Veloso and Brian Demers were featured in the January 2023 University-Industry Engagement Advisor discussing technology scouting, startups, and industry-academic partnerships and commercialization timelines.
