From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Over the past two weeks I have had the privilege of meeting more and more parents carers, community members, and most importantly chatting with students in the playground and observing their engagement in a range of activities and programs.

I attended my first Subiaco PS class assembly held in the beautiful Subi Church, where Mrs Busby’s Year 1 and 2 class entertained us with a very cute performance based on the book Mad About Minibeasts by Giles Andreae. I also watched our amazing swim team win the Interschool Swimming Championship!

Last week the school held a very special service to commemorate Anzac Day. I would
like to thank our Year 6 students for leading this event and extend our appreciation to our guests who joined us including Subiaco Council, Deputy Mayor, Cr Garry Kosovich, Dr Katrina Stratton MLA, Member for Nedlands, Chair of the Subiaco Primary School Board, Mr Louis Martin, and P&C President, Mrs Fiona Plant. Our wonderful choirs and orchestra made the service extra memorable with their performances and I thank Mr Andrew Angel and Mr Chris Shorter for all their efforts in preparing and supporting our students to perform, and and Mrs Leith Elliott for her beautiful display boards and creating the wreaths. Thank you for joining us in such large numbers at the service and contributing flowers for our wreaths. Click HERE for photos.

On the School Development Day last Friday staff engaged in a range of professional learning including, the Quality Teaching Strategy (QTS) the Department of Education’s position on effective teaching and the aspects of school culture which support improved teaching practices, and Teaching for Impact which outlines what effective teachers believe, know and do to plan quality teaching and learning.

National Walk Safely to School Day Friday 10 March
We’re Taking it in Our Stride on Friday 10 May 2024.
Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. Although walking all the way to school isn’t always realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s daily routine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more by:

  • Walking with them the whole way to school if you can
  • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
  • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads and traffic.

Please watch out for further Walk to School Day information and how to join the Subiaco Primary School Walking Bus on the morning of Friday 10 May from Mrs Emma-Louise Harrison (Year 2 L6) - Walk Safely to School Day Coordinator.

Warm wishes
Heather McNeil

School Photo Days Next Week

School photos will be taken in Week 4 this term. Last week all students received a personalised flyer from Kapture Photography which contains your child’s unique codes for ordering school photos online.

Keep Your Flyer Secure
The unique codes contained on the flyer will be issued only once.

Order Early for Sibling Photography
Sibling photos can ONLY be ordered online. Once you receive the personalised flyers for your children, it is imperative that you order your sibling photo early to avoid missing out! If maximum capacity is not reached, sibling orders close 12.00pm midday sharp, one business day prior to the first photo day.
The school or the photographers cannot accept late orders for sibling photography. Please do not ask as your request simply cannot be accommodated.

Order Early for discount photo day prices
Order your photos up to 10 calendar days after photo day to receive discount photo day prices. Late orders are handled separately to the school delivery and incur a $30 custom service charge.

The school will notify you when team and special group photos are available to view and purchase on the Kapture website. Please note; class, individual and sibling portraits are not available to view online prior to purchase.

All students will be photographed individually on photo day for school administration records as well as included in their class group presentation available for purchase to all families. Should there be any reason why your child should NOT be included in the photo shoot – please contact the school office.

Subiaco Triumphs at the Primary Champion State Schools Swimming Carnival!

We're thrilled to announce an incredible victory at the recent Primary Champion State Schools Swimming Carnival. Against stiff competition from seven other schools, our swimmers showed determination, skill, and teamwork, clinching the top spot, and bringing home the championship trophy.

For months leading up to the carnival, our swimmers and coaches, have poured their hearts into rigorous training sessions, early morning practices, and countless laps in the pool.

When the day of the carnival arrived, our team was ready. Each swimmer, whether competing in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, or relay events, gave their all, embodying the true spirit of Subiaco’s “Our Best”. Click HERE to view a video announcement of the final scores.

As we celebrate this remarkable achievement, let us also extend our gratitude to everyone who played a part in making it possible. From our talented athletes to our dedicated coach Suzanna Olsen, and Elena Nesci for her support behind the scenes. To our supportive parents – each and every one who has contributed to this success, and we couldn't be more grateful.

Congratulations once again to our incredible swimming team! Your hard work, determination, and passion have truly shone, and we couldn't be prouder.

The Student Representative Council

The Student Representative Council held its first meeting this week. During the session, we explored the roles and responsibilities of the SRC members and outlined their expectations for the coming year. The team expressed great enthusiasm and commitment to representing their peers in 2024.

Our first SRC meeting was fantastic! We wrote down what our rules are, and what we will do to make sure the students have an even more enjoyable time at school. I felt excited because it felt like a manager meeting. It felt like a privilege. I hope to make the school better by listening to students’ ideas and trying to make them a reality. ~Demid

For our first SRC meeting we covered a lot. We talked about everything that is involved and l will do everything we agreed on. l am very excited to do surveys around the school and get all the children’s ideas. Being in the SRC is about the students in this school. I enjoyed meeting everyone so much. l have always wanted to be on the SRC and it's finally my chance. l thank everyone in my class who voted for me. ~ Zoe

LP2 STEM Challenge

Here is a glimpse of our weekly STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) challenge.

This activity is intentionally linked to the Habits of The mind and develops 21st century thinking skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, innovation and collaboration.

Before construction we look at the materials we will be using, what we will be building, and we make a plan. We revise our plans during and after construction. On conclusion we share our work with our peers. Click HERE for photos.

The level of focus and engagement is fantastic! We are thinking BIG.

From the School Chaplain

Welcome back to school, it has been lovely greeting everyone as they return.

I hope the school holidays were fun and relaxing. I have enjoyed visiting classrooms over the last two weeks, and listening to students recount what they did over the holidays.

Last year I completed an application form to the Rotary Club of Ascot WA on behalf of the school to receive a donation of 2 Lego tubs. I received an email last term stating we were one of the few schools to successfully receive the tubs. Over the school holidays, I excitedly met with the board from the Rotary Club of Ascot WA, to understand how the organisation globally supports disadvantage communities, and thankfully accepted the Lego on behalf of our students. The tubs will be utilised to form a Lego Club to run during school time that will engage students in creative play and connection with others. Students and staff will be notified when Lego Club begins.
