A Gateway to Higher Ed

A graduation cap displays a personal message

A graduate displays a personal message on the top of their graduation cap during UW–Madison's spring commencement ceremony.

Four years ago, UW–Madison announced a free-tuition initiative so straightforward that it required just two things for students to qualify: live in Wisconsin and come from a household in the state’s lower half for income. No small print. No strings attached.

The program, known as Bucky’s Tuition Promise, has created an affordable gateway to higher education for thousands of Wisconsin families, transforming student lives — and campus itself.

Meet Mnookin

Chancellor-designee Jennifer L. Mnookin grasps the Wisconsin Idea in a deeply personal way. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mnookin donated a kidney to her father. A transplant solution developed at UW–Madison allowed the organ to be shipped from Los Angeles to him in Boston. Following a visit to campus, she was struck by the commitment to the Wisconsin Idea and the spirit of the community she’ll be joining in August.

The price of gas has risen considerably in the past few months, not uncommon during political turmoil. Moses Altsech of the Wisconsin School of Business explains the current increase at the pump.

"It’s not unlike the reason some people bought 100 double rolls of toilet paper in April 2020 'just in case.'"
