Doodle received the Premier Award at the 2024 Central Otago Art Society Blossom Festival Exhibition. Last Wednesday, coinciding with the opening of the Alexandra Blossom Festival, the Central Otago Art Society marked its 50th anniversary as an Incorporated Society. Originating in the early 1960s, it started as a small collective of passionate artists and art supporters from Alexandra, aiming to foster local arts. The society organised workshops, exhibitions, and classes, and worked towards becoming an incorporated entity. The group was formally established as the Central Otago Art Society (COAS) in 1974, adhering to a
constitution that is still followed today - to promote art in Central Otago and to provide artists with opportunities to enhance their skills and display their work. The inaugural exhibition took place during the Alexandra Blossom Festival in 1963, a partnership that has been nurtured for the past 50 years. This year's Blossom Festival Art Exhibition is on show in the Henderson Gallery at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery. Approximately 100 works by 52 artists spanning Otago and Southland are on show. 'Milestones' is the special category for this year. There are seven sponsored categories, six awards were presented on the opening night. Award winners were Premier Award, Dorothy Piper, Runner Up, Sarah Friedburger, Highly Commended Debbie Malcolm, Highly Commended Fiona Hughes, Special Category, Kim Bungard and Elizabeth Stevens Memorial Award, Susan Stewart. Voting for the People's
Choice award is underway and the winner will be announced this week. 100 Objects Exhibition Launch. On behalf of the Central Otago Museums Trust, we invite you to attend the launch of the 100 Objects exhibition on 16 October at the Central Stories Museum & Art Gallery. Our land, our people, our history captured in 100 objects. Five museums across Central
Otago have each selected 20 objects that tell the fascinating stories of a land rich in history. Together, these one hundred objects form a museums trail of discovery. From a century-old wedding cake, a phone set used on the same line as New Zealand’s first telephone call, to Chinese medicine books and an exquisite green glass collection - the 100 Objects exhibition will have something to delight all visitors. This launch will celebrate the meticulous research undertaken by museum staff and volunteers in curating this exhibition. A selection from the 100 objects will be on display for you to enjoy. 6:00

wordsmiths – Book now! We are eagerly anticipating our third annual Cover to Cover event. At Central Otago Arts, we like to share things around, so this year our literary evening will be held in Roxburgh. Be at the Roxburgh Hall, off Jedburgh Street by 6pm on Friday 29th November for a glass of bubbles and an evening to remember. We are so lucky to feature international award-winning novelist, Jacqueline Bublitz, who
divides her time between Melbourne and New Plymouth. Her debut crime novel, Before You Knew My Name, was written after spending a summer in New York – which is where the novel is set. Her book has sold over 100,000 copies in Australia and New Zealand alone. It was the double winner of the 2022 Ngaio Marsh Awards, winning Best First Book and Best Novel. It also picked up major awards in Australia and was shortlisted for the International Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger award. Jacqueline will be reading from both Before You Knew My Name and her new book, Leave the Girls Behind – to be published in October. We can’t wait! Jacqueline will be talking with her good friend and host, Central Otago resident and fellow award-winning writer, Kyle Mewburn. Kyle will also read passages from – and discuss her new novel - Sewing Moonlight, which is partly
set in Central Otago. It’s a beautiful read! Both writers will leave plenty of time for a question and answer session – over a glass of wine and a traditional country supper. Book HERE Enjoy everything on in Central Otago in October.
