Newsletter 18 - October 22, 2021

From The Principal

Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members -  Welcome to Term 4.
I hope that all of our families have had a wonderful break and are now ready for a challenging and engaging Term 4 at Subiaco PS.  I would also like to warmly welcome those families that are new to our school this term.
Our Planned major activities in our Term 4 Calendar include:
Chapathon, Edu-dance, Swimming for Yrs. 2-5, Year 5/6 Speak Up Awards, K/PP orientation, Fun Day, Year 6 graduation, SRC elections and Numero competition.

Kambarang (October – November)
The Noongar Season ‘Kambarang' is represented by the colour yellow as it symbolises the return of the hot weather.
During Kambarang season, we see an abundance of colours and flowers exploding all around us.
The yellows of many of the acacias continue to abound, along with some of the banksias and many other smaller delicate flowering plants including the kangaroo paw and orchids.
During this time the Balga’s will continue to flower, especially if they've been burnt in the past year or closely shaved.
One of the most striking displays of flowers to be seen during this season will be the moojar, or Australian Christmas Tree (Nuytsia floribunda). The bright orange-yellow flowers serve to signal the heat is on its way.
October is also the most likely time of the year that you'll encounter a snake as the reptiles start to awaken from their hibernation and look to make the most of the warm to assist them in getting enough energy to look for food.
It's also a time that many young families of birds will be singing out for their parents to feed them. Koolbardies (magpies) will be out protecting their nests and their babies.
Many things are undergoing transformation with the warm change in the weather and longer dry periods accompany a definite warming trend.

World Teacher Day

World Teachers Day is an opportunity to celebrate and thank WA teachers for their important role in our communities and the positive impact they have on the lives of students. At Subiaco Primary we recognise our exceptional teachers and thank them for the incredible job they do every day.

Undercovered Area

The new undercovered area took 6 years to realise and the result of many hours of careful organisation, planning and committed fundraising. While it may be the newest addition to our school grounds, this undercover area is continuing a long tradition here at Subiaco Primary of adding to and upgrading the school’s facilities to meet the needs of its 700 plus students and the broader school community.

Preliminary investigations began in 2015, and in 2016, a survey of all parents and staff ranked getting a new undercovered area as the number 1 priority in grounds improvements. Next, two Department of Education funded feasibility studies were undertaken. A fully enclosed undercovered area was costed between $1.9 and $1.95 million dollars and a special engineered roller door for the previous undercover area was costed at $400,000. Neither option met the budget, nor the ability to have all children sit comfortably underneath it. The final option built is double the size of the previous undercovered area at a cost of $220,000.

A project like this is representative of the work of many people. Thanks are extended to Zoe Schaffert, current Board Chair and Sue Piperis and Marina Hogan, previous Board Chairs  and all Board members from 2015-2021 for their significant input and advice over a 6 year period, considering options, designs and a fully rigorous and  informed decision making process.

Thank you to the P&C for their generous funding totalling $70,000 from 3 separate P&C funding rounds ($35,000 in 2016, $25,000 in 2018 to resurface the bitumen and $10,000 in 2020).  Thank you to all the CLPs and parents who organised fundraisers and those who supported these events. Thanks also to parents for donating $2,000 towards purchase of speakers as a thank you gift when I left at the end of Term 1.

We were also successful in receiving a federal government Local Schools Community Fund grant of $15,000 with the support of  Ms Celia Hammond MP, the Federal Member for Curtin.

We are very grateful to Debra Brown, past parent and architect for her knowledge and expertise with selecting the under covered area design and to the Farmers Market for their financial contributions which has enabled us to fund many grounds projects.

Thanks are also extended to Deb Hands, Deputy Principal and Allison Swan, Manager Corporate Services for their significant work in making this project happen.

Our Creed states: Our School is not a building it is a gathering of minds and hearts. This is so true for our undercovered area. It is a place where the students eat, play, socialise and learn. It hosts Phys Ed classes, before school training, music incursions, drama performances, parades and special events, such as Dance concerts and our ever popular sports carnival food stalls. On the weekend it plays host to the Subiaco Farmer’s Markets, which attracts local shoppers and people from further afield.

The best thing about memories is making them. I wish you many happy memories in our undercovered area.

Kind regards to all our children and their families.

Chapathon

Thank you to all students, parents and staff for your participation and support for this year's Chapathon. A special thank you to those families who contributed more than the nominated amount.

With showers predicted and the stormy day before, we were expecting to have to reschedule. However, the rain held off and the sun came out just as we walked over to the Theatre Gardens. A special thank you also to Mr Clancy for being our DJ!

$7775 was raised, which will go towards the continuation of the Chaplaincy program at Subiaco Primary. Thank you again! Click HERE for photos.

The role of our Student Representative Council Member
The role of SRC members is to promote the views of students and to encourage students to become actively involved in our school. SRC representatives ask for input from peers, and attend approximately 1 or 2 meetings per term, depending on need where they represent the students in the school and together voice their opinions.

The role will be shaped and developed over time by student input, but will not be too onerous for any representative.Examples of SRC Involvement

  • Building on school spirit and providing a student voice.
  • Workshops on topics of interest to students.
  • Identifying problems which may need attention, eg. student safety in certain playground areas.
  • Developing negotiation and problem solving skills in students.
  • Reviewing and evaluating school rules.
  • Raising awareness of school priorities to enhance student wellbeing.

The SRC operates separately to Year 6 student leadership positions, the Social Justice Group and year level leadership opportunities across the school.

The revised timetable is below

The cost of the program has been halved due to the reduced number of sessions. 2022 Head Girls for MLC, PLC and St Hilda’s

We are proud to announce that three of our ex-students will be head girl of their respective schools next year. Remarkably Annie Gilchrist (MLC), Varna Shetty (St Hilda’s) and Edwina Mactier (PLC) were competing against more than 50% of students who put their hands up for leadership positions.

The girls were interviewed by Scoop magazine and had the following to say.

As Annie from MLC says, “The school promotes positivity and honesty and encourages all students to attempt to uphold these values in everyday behaviour. I feel as though these have really influenced my approach to life and activities I partake in.

Varna from St Hilda’s notes the Subi Primary motto of ‘our best’ and the extent to which the motto was emphasised and, importantly, lived every day with students encouraged to give everything their all. She was keen to point out that doing your best doesn’t necessarily mean succeeding but it does mean stretching yourself, giving things a go and believing in your ability.

Edwina from PLC agrees; “Subi Primary fosters a very inclusive and supportive environment which helps instill in the students the ideas of not being afraid to make mistakes, to be resilient and no matter the situation, to always try your best.”

Well done to these three exceptional young ladies.

Board News

As part of our commitment to ongoing development and induction of new members our Board attended training in Term 3, reviewing our knowledge in areas such as the foundations of an effective board, setting directions, monitoring risk and performance. Subiaco Primary School hosted the event, which was also attended by Board members from a range of local schools. It was a great opportunity to hear how other school Boards operate and ensure we have processes in place to work effectively as part of the governance of the school. The focus of our Term 3 Board meeting was reviewing early NAPLAN data, reviewing our Business Plan targets and milestones. When discussing and analysing school data we focus on 3 key questions: How are we going? How do we know? What are we going to do to improve? Our role as a Board is then to determine if we are making appropriate progress against our targets and identify any actions needed. A standing item in our meetings is the Principal updates so Bea can convey key messages about the operations of the school relevant to the wider community.

This week we had our first Term 4 meeting where we had an invited guest Gemma Hayley, Year 4 teacher, share her experience working on the school’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). In line with the Community focus of the Business Plan: Embrace diversity and cultural responsiveness the RAP is a working document based on the reflections of staff outlining practical plans for reconciliation. We reviewed the Strategic Plan for 2022 to ensure we are on track to achieve our Business Plan milestones and targets.

Our next meeting in Term 4 is an open meeting and we invite anyone from our school community to attend. Please email zoe.schaffert@education.wa.edu.au  to advise if you are planning on joining the meeting. It will be held in the school library on Wednesday 17 November at 6.30pm.

Uniform Shop News

Welcome back to all students and especially the five new students starting this term.  We've had unusually cold, wet weather for the start of term so if warm jackets, track pants or long sleeved gold polos are needed there is plenty in stock. The one exception is size 8 jackets which are low on stock.
A huge delivery of new uniform stock has arrived ! I'm happy to fill all uniform orders now that your children may require for the start of Term One 2022. These can be ordered online and sent to your child's classroom, or by visiting the Uniform Shop on Tuesday or Thursday from 8.30 till 10.30 am.
New school backpacks are expected to arrive the week of 19th November. Freight delays are a worry but I'm hopeful they will be delivered then!
Finally a huge THANK YOU to all the parents who donated good quality items to the second hand rack, it is greatly appreciated. Our school community is always so generous!
