18 December 2025 Water and roading infrastructure in the city’s northwest is being upgraded to make sure these essential services continue to meet the needs of our growing communities. Starting early next year, pipe replacement and transport projects in the area will get underway as part of a coordinated work programme.
Projects starting in January 2026The first two projects in the Northwest programme get under way in January 2026. Our contractor will be replacing water pipes on sections of Memorial Avenue and Greers Road, and on part of Langdons Road and Morrison Avenue. The project on Memorial Avenue and Greers Road is expected to finish in late July 2026. Work will start on the city bound side of Memorial Avenue before moving onto Greers Road and heading north to finish just short of the intersection with Wairakei Road. The work in Memorial Avenue will be between 216 Memorial Avenue and the Greers Road intersection and is expected to be complete by early February 2026. Detours will be in place and will be clearly signposted. The project on Morrison Avenue and Langdons Road is expected to finish in mid-April 2026, with the Langdons Road component complete by mid-February. Work on Langdons Road will take place between Oakland Street and the western entrance to Northlink. Traffic on Langdons Road will follow a one-way system westbound towards Greers Road. While we aim to meet these timeframes, water-related work can sometimes uncover unexpected issues that may slow progress, for example if we encounter unexpected underground services that clash with the pipe route. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to keep everything on track. The works notices have more details on each project and the traffic impacts: Our contractor will be working with businesses and organisations in these two areas to understand your needs and reduce the disruption as much as possible. Some noise, disruption and delays as a result of these works are inevitable. We’ve planned our programme to reduce disruption as much as possible and keep traffic flowing.
Impact on businesses and services in the northwestWe know road works can be frustrating, particularly for those of you who have already been impacted by road works over the past few years. We’re working hard to maintain access to businesses and other services while the Northwest upgrades are underway. Council staff have been talking with business owners in the northwest area about the projects. While most of the people we spoke to appreciate the need for the work to be done, they expressed concerns about the impact of road works on their business. They’re worried about the potential loss of parking and the impact of lane closures and congestion. They stressed the importance of making it as easy as possible for customers to get to their businesses. Following these conversations, we’ve made some changes to our programme to further reduce disruption, including rescheduling work at the Wairakei Road and Greers Road intersection. Water supply work at the intersection originally planned as part of the work in Greers Road early next year has been rescheduled to be part of a later project. We’ll continue to listen and consider how we can adapt our approach. As contractors are appointed for each project, they’ll be talking to businesses and residents to understand their needs and consider how to further reduce the impact.
