The war in Ukraine has already not gone the way that Vladimir Putin would have liked. But he’s also having to conduct a war at home against those speaking out against the invasion and spreading accurate details of its impact on Ukrainian civilians and Russian soldiers. What’s more, there are murmurings of dissent among some of Russia’s political and economic elite.
Ben Noble, associate professor of Russian politics at UCL, talks us through this opposition and why it’s so hard to assess how deep it goes. How the opposition develops will depend on a number of factors and could be crucial to the outcome of the conflict – we’re likely to see further crackdowns as a result.
We’re also likely to see increasing effects of the invasion on the global economy over the coming days and weeks. But how far will the shockwaves spread?
Plus, does life really flash before your eyes when you die? A neuroscientist give us a very personal account of what research can tell us about our final moments.
