EPC 2028 will be organized by EAPS in collaboration with the Estonian Institute for Population Studies at Tallinn University,  from 28 June-1 July 2028.

European Journal of Population

The European Journal of Population (EJP) is the flagship journal of EAPS. EJP aims to improve understanding of population phenomena by giving priority to work that contributes to the development of theory and method, and that spans the boundaries between demography and such disciplines as sociology, anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, epidemiology and other sciences contributing to public health. Contributors come from around the world, and the coverage includes both European and non-European countries.

The journal addresses a broad public of researchers, policy makers and others concerned with population processes and their consequences.

Job Openings

Postdoctoral position: NNF-IAS Fellowship Programme ''Inequity in Health''

The eight Nordic Institutes for Advanced Studies are pleased to announce the first call for fellowships in the NNF-IAS fellowship programme on Health and Sustainability, supported by the Novo Nordisk Foundation.

This call is the first of four calls. The first sub-theme is: Inequity in Health

In this first call, five fellowships are available for curiosity driven, talented international researchers from any discipline. The five fellowships are distributed among the four main partner institutes and start on September 1, 2027, lasting for 23 months until July 2029.

Call for applications for the new LIVES doctoral cohort (2026-28)

The LIVES Centre is now welcoming applications for its 2026-28 doctoral cohort.

The call is open to all PhD candidates conducting research in the social sciences, psychology, health sciences, educational sciences or related disciplines, whose thesis includes a life course or lifespan perspective. In addition to workshops that foster skill development and knowledge acquisition, the LIVES doctoral program offers the opportunity to be mentored by leading experts in the field of life course research through its annual doctoral presentations (Doctoriales).

PhD candidates who wish to follow our programme in parallel with their disciplinary training (e.g., in social psychology, neuroscience, etc.) are very welcome. We provide certificates of attendance for our modules, including the corresponding number of ECTS credits.

(At least) Two Assistant Professor positions at Umeå universitet 

Umeå University aims to give the next generation of research leaders the best possible conditions to conduct cutting-edge research through the Umeå University Northern Star Fellows Programme. Through this university-wide initiative, we offer 10 early-career researchers the opportunity to develop their research over the long term through a six-year tenure-track assistant professorship, with the possibility of promotion to associate professor.

Postdoctoral Research Associate (100%, 1 year), King's College London

King's College London is recruiting a Research Associate to join the Global Institute for Women's Leadership (King's Business School), working with Prof. Heejung Chung. The post involves quantitative research on modern work, well-being, leadership, and entrepreneurship. Applicants should hold a PhD in a relevant social science discipline and have strong quantitative skills. Experience with grant writing is desirable. Salary: £45,031–£52,514. Start date: 1 November 2026 or ASAP.

PhD student in Sociological Demography at Stockholm University

The ERC-funded project DEM-LOSS on social inequalities in family bereavement seeks a doctoral student to join the research team based in Stockholm University. The ideal candidate should have an interest in kinship demography, mortality inequalities, social stratification, or life course theory, strong background in demographic or statistical research methods, and experience working with demographic data (preferably population registers). Postdoctoral Position in Demography at Tel Aviv University

The Center for Population Science at Tel Aviv University invites applications from qualified candidates in demography, sociology, economics, public policy, environmental studies and related fields for a one-year postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to participate in ongoing research at the center in development and develop their independent research agenda in core areas of population science.

Multiple Postdoctoral Research Associate Positions in Reproductive Demography, Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science, University of Oxford, United Kingdom

The Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science is seeking two to three Postdoctoral Researchers in Reproductive Demography. Successful applicants will join the UKRI (originally an ERC Consolidator Award) funded project SEXRATIO led by Dr. Joshua Wilde. The project seeks to understand variation in natural sex ratios at birth and their implications for maternal health, pre-natal demography, and the measurement of missing women and gender discrimination more broadly. The project particularly seeks to build an intellectually diverse multidisciplinary team, meaning applicants from many fields are welcome to apply, including demography, sociology, economics, public health, epidemiology, geography, statistics, computer science, and related fields. Quantitative and coding skills are particularly valued.

VID-Job Announcement: Praedoc (Diss) (f/m/x) for project “Psychology of Fertility Behaviour”

The VID (together with the University of Vienna) is looking for an outstanding PhD candidate to join the research project "Psychology of Fertility Behaviour”, which is funded through an FWF MERIT Award. The position is embedded in the Research Group on Fertility and Population Change, but forms part of an independent research project led by the project's Principal Investigator Dr. Kateryna Golovina.

Call for Nominations: 2027 IUSSP Early Career Awards

The IUSSP Early Career Awards aim to honour outstanding contributions to the broad field of population studies by early career scholars in different world regions and boost the global visibility of their achievements. The award is offered in the following world regions: Africa,  Asia and the Pacific, Europe,  Latin America and the Caribbean, and North America.

Who is eligible?

• Candidates up to 7 years post-PhD (after 1 November 2019, with extensions possible to account for career interruptions such as parental leave...)
• Must be an IUSSP member (listed in IUSSP membership directory)

Nomination requirements:

• 5 IUSSP member supporters, from more than one country, at least 3 from candidate’s region
• Self-nominations allowed

Call for Papers for the Special Collection “Kinship Demography: Structures, Dynamics, and Inequalities” in Demographic Research.

The collection focuses on the demographic study of kinship and welcomes contributions that advance empirical, methodological, and theoretical understanding of kinship structures, dynamics, and inequalities across populations and over time. We particularly encourage submissions that examine variation in kin availability and family forms, intergenerational processes, caregiving, loss of kin, sociodemographic change, and the development of novel approaches for studying kinship beyond the household.

Submissions are accepted from 15 June 2026 until 15 December 2026 through the Demographic Research submission portal as part of the Special Collection.

Call for Papers – Special Collection on Socio-Economic Inequalities in Mortality in the Long-Run

We are inviting you to submit contributions to the Special Collection on the Socio-Economic Inequalities in Mortality in the Long-Run, organized by Kristina Thompson, Tim Riswick, and Sean Clouston.

Open Course on Topics in Digital and Computational Demography at MPIDR: 2-6 November 2026

The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is offering a new edition of its open course on Topics in Digital and Computational Demography (2-6 November 2026) and encourages qualified candidates to apply. This year, topics include:

Call for Abstracts: International Seminar on Inequalities along the Reproductive Trajectory (Dec 3-4 2026, CSIC, Madrid, Spain)

An interdisciplinary, international seminar on inequalities along the
reproductive trajectory is being arranged at CSIC-IEGD (Madrid, Spain,
3-4 December) within the INTRAREPRO Project. It aims to bring together
researchers working on inequalities in fertility decisions and
behaviors, reproductive and perinatal health, and postnatal outcomes.

Submission deadline: 9 October 2026.

Short course: Introduction to Longitudinal Data Analysis using R

Longitudinal data is essential for social and health research because it allows us to understand how people, organisations, and societies change, why events happen, and to support stronger causal inference.

In this course, you will learn both how to clean longitudinal data and the main statistical models used to analyse it. The course will cover three fundamental frameworks for analysing longitudinal data: multilevel modelling, structural equation modelling and event history analysis. 

The course is organised as a mixture of lectures and hands-on practicals using real-world data. During the course, there will also be opportunities to discuss how to apply these models in your own research.

The weekly format is designed to allow you to complete the guided reading for each session and apply the techniques we cover to your own research. This learn-apply-review format gives you time to consolidate each method, use it with your own data, and resolve problems while support is still available. The follow-up data clinics will further help you apply these methods to your own research.

Call for Abstracts: POPCLIMA, University of Bologna, Italy, 28-29 January 2027

The ERC POPCLIMA project has shown that climate change significantly affects fertility, mortality, migration, and population health. As climate risks increasingly interact with conflict, economic instability, and food insecurity, climate demography is entering a new phase. T

he closing conference will bring together international researchers and early-career scholars to review current evidence and develop a forward-looking research agenda. The programme will feature invited speakers, thematic paper sessions, presentations of key POPCLIMA findings, and discussions on future population projections. A multidisciplinary roundtable will also connect perspectives from demography, climate science, economics, and related fields.

Submission deadline: 20 September 2026.

An interdisciplinary workshop bringing together academics, policymakers and practitioners to examine fertility, family formation and reproductive agency, and develop evidence-based behavioral policy responses. Abstracts presenting completed or ongoing research are welcome.
