Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant update

Tuesday 7 April

Pond health and odour

Overall pond conditions remain stable this week, with monitoring confirming the system is continuing to perform well as we move firmly into winter mode.

Staff are observing ongoing changes in pond colour across the ponds. These are expected seasonal shifts that typically occur as daylight hours shorten and biological activity naturally slows, rather than any sign of declining pond health.

Recent overcast conditions have contributed to some short‑term variability in dissolved oxygen levels, which is normal at this time of year. The ponds remain well within expected operating ranges and continue to function as intended under winter conditions.

Community odour monitoring continues to record low levels of hydrogen sulphide, which is consistent with the generally stable conditions being observed across the system.

As winter conditions become more established, day‑to‑day conditions can still fluctuate. This may include brief changes in oxygen levels and biological performance.

Our team will continue close monitoring and respond as needed to maintain stable operation.

A word from Gary

Since getting involved in this project I’ve had many insightful conversations with members of the community.

Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to get in touch and share your experiences – it’s been incredibly valuable.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve had limited attendance at my drop‑in sessions at the Bromley Community Centre, so I won’t be continuing these for now. Instead, I’ll be basing myself out of the Council staff offices at the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant.

I’m still very keen to catch up with anyone who would like a chat. The best way to do this is to get in touch directly so we can arrange a time that suits. I’m happy to meet you at your place, or somewhere nearby. I want to make sure the way I work reflects what the community actually needs, and it’s clear the drop‑in sessions aren’t quite the right fit at the moment.

This afternoon I’ll be giving the Community Board an update on recent work and sharing some of what I’ve been hearing from the community. The 4pm meeting will be livestreamed on the Board’s YouTube channel, with a recording available afterwards.

If you’d like to get in touch, you can call or text me on 027 239 6317, or email gary.watson@ccc.govt.nz.

Work programme for aerator installation being finalised

Following the recent decision to increase aeration at the wastewater treatment plant to help reduce odour, our teams are now busy working on the roll-out plan.

We expect to be able to share a work programme with more detailed timeframes and next steps in the near future, and will provide a further update once this information is finalised.
