Getting in touch this festive season

The festive season is almost here.

We hope you get the chance to enjoy it and spend time with your family or friends.

If you find this time of year difficult, you can phone the Samaritans at any time for a judgement-free conversation on 116 123.

A group of four elderly women sitting around a table enjoying a meal together. They are wearing colorful paper crowns and are engaged in conversation. The table is set with plates of food, including vegetables and what appears to be roast potatoes. A clock is visible on the wall in the background, and the setting looks cozy and inviting.

Winter Fuel Payments are now being rolled out by the Department for Work and Pensions.

An elderly woman with short gray hair and a warm smile sits in a cozy indoor setting, wearing a blue jacket. In the background, another woman is partially visible, holding a string of colorful beads. The atmosphere appears relaxed and friendly, with soft furnishings and natural light.

If you haven’t had a letter or payment by 28 January 2026, please contact the Winter Fuel Payment Centre.

Stay fire-safe this festive season

A few simple steps can keep you and your loved ones safe this festive season.

  • Check fairy light wires before you plug them in. If they look damaged, don’t use them.

  • Switch off lights and decorations when you go to bed or leave home.

  • If you have a tree, keep it watered and away from heat sources. Make sure it doesn’t block any exits.

  • Don’t overload sockets with too many electrical items.
A young boy with red hair is sitting on a wooden chair, holding a shiny red Christmas ornament. He is smiling and looking at the camera. In the background, a beautifully decorated Christmas tree is adorned with gold and red ornaments, twinkling lights, and festive decorations. There is a warm, cheerful atmosphere, enhanced by a "Merry Christmas" sign nearby.
  • Keep candles away from trees, curtains and anything that can catch fire. Make sure they’re out of reach of children and pets. Always blow them out before leaving the room or going to bed.

  • Safely charge devices that use a lithium battery by using the correct battery, charging away from flammable materials and replacing the battery if it's damaged or overheating.

  • Test your smoke alarms every month.
