Updates to the Health Star Rating system

Following the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation meeting held in February, the following updates to the Healthy Star Rating system were highlighted:

Treatment of Fruit and Vegetable Juices under the Health Star Rating (HSR) system

"The Australian Government Department of Health provided further advice in relation to adjusting the HSR calculator for 100 per cent fruit and vegetable juices (no added sugars).

The Forum agreed to maintain the status quo, supporting the implementation of the HSR review calculator for 100 per cent fruit and vegetable juices with no added sugar. The Forum noted the system adequately reflects the variation in sugar content for juices which is important for consumers in assisting in their choice of beverages."

In light of this, ABC News released an article to further unpack this update, featuring comment from Nutrition Australia dietitian Leanne Elliston. Click here to read the article.

Rethink Sugary Drinks

A new video for the Rethink Sugary Drinks campaign has been released.

Regular consumption of sugary drinks can cause tooth decay and, in the long run, unhealthy weight gain, increasing the risk of serious health problems.

Yet the beverage industry continues to entice young Australians into buying their products. Using seductive marketing tactics, sugary drink companies position their products as the key to all aspects of a better life.

Recipe Idea

Spinach and Feta Filo Rolls

As a tasty, vegetarian take on the classic Australian sausage roll, these spinach and feta filo rolls can be adapted to suit you - include other types of herbs, cheese and flavours.

Ingredients
500g frozen spinach, thawed and drained
4 spring onions, finely sliced
¼ cup fresh herbs (e.g. parsley, mint, dill), finely chopped
200g feta, crumbled
1 lemon, zested
Freshly cracked pepper, to season
8 sheets fresh filo pastry
Extra virgin olive oil or spray
2 teaspoons sesame seeds

Method
1. Preheat oven to 200°C and line a large baking tray with baking paper.
2. In a mixing bowl, combine the thawed and drained spinach, spring onions, fresh herbs, feta, lemon zest and pepper. Mix well to combine. Divide the spinach mixture into 4 portions.
3. On a clean work surface, place down one sheet of fresh filo pastry. Lightly brush or spray with extra virgin olive oil. Add another sheet of pastry and lightly brush or spray again with extra virgin olive oil. Fold this in half from left to right.
4. Place 1 portion of the spinach mixture at the end of the pastry sheet closest to you and roll the pastry firmly to enclose the filling. Repeat with the remaining spinach mixture and pastry to make 4 rolls.
5. Cut each roll into 2 – 3 pieces and place seam side down on the lined baking tray.
6. Lightly brush or spray each roll with extra virgin olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
7. Bake in the oven for approx. 20 minutes or until golden brown.
