Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant update

Aerators are a go!

Short term odour possible during commissioning.

We’re pleased to share that we've started commissioning the new aerators on the pond, with six to eight of the units (shown above) expected to be up and running today. This is a significant milestone and a great step forward in improving pond performance.

As part of the commissioning process, there may be a short-term increase in odour. This can happen as the aerators begin operating and stir up material that has settled in the ponds. We expect any change in odour to be temporary.

The positive news is that the ponds have been in good condition recently, with only low levels of odour, so we’re starting from a strong position.

The eight aerators currently being commissioned represent around 80% of the total aeration capacity. At this stage, they are being powered by diesel generators while we put a permanent electrical supply in place.

We’ll provide a further update in our usual newsletter tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning.
