A Message from the Principal

A warm welcome to this edition of Newman Newbies.

As I write this piece, I am full of excitement as I have just experienced the wonderful work in some of our classes this week, alongside our students and dedicated staff. I listened and offered my feedback in the Year 7 Shine class as they presented their Shark Tank ideas. With the guidance of their teacher, Ms Cate McKnight, the students demonstrated concept thinking and planning to Mrs Beth Murphy (PK-12 Deputy Principal Teaching & Learning) and me, which was brilliant.

Not long after, I was so impressed with the published authors’ work of our Year 2 students at our Marian Campus. If that was not enough, I walked into one of our Kindergarten classes with Mrs Simpson where the students explored the “wonderful world of bees”, nurturing their own beehive and creating model bees to add to their learning about their ecological importance. This is our Vision for Learning - Shine through Discovery at work; students developing their critical thinking and creativity in pursuit of their own personal best.

Late last term we were led by the Year 12 group in our inaugural “Spirit Week” across the College. The Year 12 leaders and their peers had worked with Mrs Sarah Ellam (Deputy Principal Secondary, Wellbeing) and Mr Mike Vander Heever (Co-ordinator of Student Leadership) in focusing on our five (5) Marist characteristics across the week. Again, what an experience and an example of the way in which our students lead in our Marist Spirituality.

Developing relationships and learning to engage in the world is fundamental to the growth of our young people. At Newman College, our Marist characteristic of Presence calls us to actively engage with each other and grow our sense of community. As we swing into Term 3, there are so many opportunities for our students to actively engage with each other and communities in our Ministry program. Advocacy, social justice and Christian service-learning partnerships will be a feature of this term in our Game Changers groups, Marist Connect, Mullewa immersion and Winter Sleepout. Our founder, St Marcellin Champagnat contended that this sort of engagement and action in community helps us lead young people to become Good Citizens and Good Christians.

It is shaping up to be an exciting semester in Ministry, Learning, the Arts and Sport.

I hope you enjoy this edition.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Perth Science & Engineering Challenge

Our Year 10 students attended the Perth Science and Engineering Challenge, presented by The University of Newcastle. The team competed against other Perth schools in engaging, hands-on STEM activities such as designing an earthquake-proof tower, building a hovercraft or bridge and providing electricity to a city.

Congratulations to the students who took home Champion School!

College Production - The Tempest

The senior College drama students presented a stuning adaptation of Shakespeare’s final play, The Tempest.  This poetic and provocative retelling featured original songs and live music.

The students’ performance was truly remarkable. Their talent, dedication, and infectious enthusiasm shone through, captivating the audience from start to finish. It was a testament to their hard work and countless hours of rehearsals, leaving the audience spellbound.

Cross Country Competitions

Term 2 is Cross Country season and it started with the Guild Cross Country at Marcellin and Lavalla Campuses. The top performers then went on to compete in the School Sports WA Carnival for Secondary Schools where Newman College took out the Overall Winner and the ACC Carnival.  The Year 3-6 students competed in the IPSHA Carnival, taking out numerous year group medals. The Education Support students participated in the ACC ISP Fun Run.

Opening of the new Year 3-6 Building

This term marked a special day as our Year 3-6 students moved into their brand new building and classrooms!  The excitement was palpable as everyone explored the bright, modern spaces designed to assist with learning, innovation and creativity.
A huge thank you to our amazing teachers, dedicated students, IT and Facilities teams for their incredible efforts.  Classes were able to explore their new spaces with awe and wonder and settle into the new surroundings, with the joy of learning evident everywhere.

Champagnat Day

Champagnat Day is a special day at the College where we come together as a community to honour our founder, Saint Marcellin Champagnat.  The day started with mass followed by the presentation of the prestigious Champagnat Awards. These awards recognise a student from each year and staff members who embody the Marist Characteristics of Presence, Simplicity, Family Spirit, Love of Work, and In the Way of Mary.

The Primary campus enjoyed Buddy Day, engaging in fun activities with their buddies, fostering a spirit of camaraderie and joy and finished the day with enthusiastic Lapathon on the Lavalla Oval.

Year 13 Brunch

We had the pleasure of welcoming back the Class of 2023 for our inaugural Year 13 Brunch at Newman College! It was a fantastic opportunity for our recent graduates to reconnect with friends and catch up with staff as we officially welcomed them into our alumni community.
Seeing the excitement and joy in the reunions between students and staff was truly heartwarming. We wrapped up the morning with an exclusive tour of the new Year 3-6 building, showcasing the wonderful developments at the College.

APPLICATIONS FOR ENROLMENT

Newman College continues to be a school of choice for local families. This has led to a recent surge in Applications for Enrolment. The focus on Year 7 intake years has grown considerably. The effect has been a significant increase in the College’s waitlists for upcoming Year 7 cohorts including 2025, 2026 and 2027. This trend is expected to continue for Year 7 cohorts in 2028 and beyond. The College is unable to accommodate all students with an offer due to the extremely high demand for places.

The College wishes to advise that students who attend Newman College in their Primary school years are guaranteed enrolment into Year 7. We, therefore, encourage families to consider securing an available position in our Primary year groups should they wish to guarantee ongoing enrolment into Secondary school years.

The following year groups have limited availability at present (July, 2024), and are subject to ongoing change:

  • Pre-Primary
  • Year 2
  • Year 3

Should you have a desire to bring forward your Application for Enrolment into one of the above-listed year groups, please CONTACT US via email without delay. Acceptance into our Primary year groups will ensure a position is maintained in Year 7.

*All applications are assessed in line with the Enrolment Policy and are subject to review and approval by the College Principal.
