Kia ora, I hope you are all enjoying this stunning weather as much as I am - what an extreme change this is from the previous weekend where making a snowman was the highlight. It's a crazy part of the world we love to live in. It has been quite hectic for me lately, all thanks to the Art Awards (my excuse for the late newsletter).
I’m pleased to say the selectors have now chosen the 50 finalists. From an organiser's point of view, I am happy to step back and allow the professionals to do their job as I know the process of choosing the finalists must be very difficult.
I would really like to thank all the artists who sent in entries. For some it is nothing new, but for others new to exhibiting and awards, it is quite nerve-wracking to have your art right ‘out there’ in the public arena. However, I know that it will be a stunning exhibition and as a brand new event on the arts calendar, it will be very beneficial to the arts in Central Otago overall. By the way, tickets to the opening evening are selling fast, so don’t miss out. You can purchase them from Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery or Hullabaloo Art Space in Old Cromwell.
On Tuesday night I went along to the gifting of last year's ‘WoolOn’ winning garment to Central Stories Museum by the Blossom Festival committee. They had five lovely models dressed in some of the previous winning outfits. The workmanship in these gowns is incredible and the Museum is very lucky to have such precious woollen beauties to display. Do come and see them if you get a chance.
The Cromwell and District Community Arts Council has done a great job in getting the touring NZ String Quartet, along with international pianist Peter Nagy, to perform on the 31st August in the Cromwell Memorial Hall. Peter Nagy will be testing the brand new Boston Concert Grand Piano, so for all lovers of rhapsodies and classical music this will be a real treat. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience sheer brilliance.
Fine Thyme Theatre is right in the middle of its production of ‘StiFF’ and if the media coverage is anything to go by it looks a rather raunchy number. There’s still time to catch one of the shows with the closing this Saturday night. And if you don’t know what to do this Sunday there are four events on! This doesn’t happen very often in Central - just click through into the events below to find out more.
