I’m not a fan of the dentist. One of the few positives of the pandemic was that, with clinics closed, I didn’t feel guilty about not going. But it’s probably time for a check-up. Research shows that, among those who get COVID, people with gum disease are much more likely to need intensive care. They’re also significantly more likely to die.

Both gum disease and COVID cause inflammation, and if experienced together, this may push the immune system into a dangerous overreaction. It also could be that badly controlled bacteria in the mouth help the coronavirus spread to the lungs. Regardless, if you’re not already, now is a great time to get serious about looking after your oral health.
