I’m not a fan of the dentist. One of the few positives of the pandemic was that, with clinics closed, I didn’t feel guilty about not going. But it’s probably time for a check-up. Research shows that, among those who get COVID, people with gum disease are much more likely to need intensive care. They’re also significantly more likely to die.
Both gum disease and COVID cause inflammation, and if experienced together, this may push the immune system into a dangerous overreaction. It also could be that badly controlled bacteria in the mouth help the coronavirus spread to the lungs. Regardless, if you’re not already, now is a great time to get serious about looking after your oral health.
The return of wild species is often seen as a good thing. But what about wolves? In Spain today, wolves occupy twice the area they did in the 1970s. Shepherds find it hard to live with them, but coexistence is possible, argues Hanna Pettersson. And when does banter turn into bullying? Research conducted with teenagers and students has found that seven factors can push good-hearted humour over the line.
Join us and a panel of climate experts for an online event this Thursday November 18 to dissect the outcomes of the Glasgow COP26 summit and look at what needs to happen next. More details are available here.
