What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - May

Te Tupua - The Goblin Arts on Tour NZ in conjunction with Arts Central are bringing "Te Tupua - The Goblin" to Bannockburn in May. Te Tupua is set in the 1800's and tells the tale of a Scottish lad of 10 who is driven into slavery aboard His Majesty’s Ships. After 15 years at sea, he is cast onto the shoreline of Aotearoa and his fight for survival begins. Te Tupua is a solo play, written and performed by
intercultural performance and theatre director John G Davies. Early 19th century in Aotearoa was a dynamic time. Māori were becoming aware they were no longer alone, and that other races from the north were coming. Pākehā who lived here at that time forged an existence on various terms. The recorded experiences are vivid and fraught with danger, yet these stories reveal deep alliances, friendships, marriages, and hard-won loyalties. This play is drawn from those histories and the central character is an amalgam of the experiences of some of those who lived in here at that time. The project aims to promote artists and the arts, encourage community engagement in the arts, and boost art tourism in the region. Previously, the arts trail was accessible through a booklet distributed to public venues,
but it has become outdated with artists moving and new ones joining. To enhance long-term project management, we are introducing an arts trail rack card to direct people to the Central Otago Arts Trail online, which will be easier to update. In addition, we plan to highlight public art works of interest across our region. If you are part of the creative industry in Central Otago and have a
studio, workshop, gallery, or shop open to the public, please get in touch! We would be thrilled to include you on our Central Otago Arts Trail. Email: [email protected] or Phone: 022 017 0478. Make sure you get out and enjoy everything on in the arts in Central Otago in May.
