Victoria’s brand-new St Kilda Pier is now open to the public!

Melbourne’s most famous seaside playground has a new landmark attraction. Opened this weekend thanks to a $53 million investment by the Victorian Government, the new St Kilda Pier is this summer’s must-see destination.

Visit for a walk, enjoy your morning coffee from the cascading seating or watch the sunset over the city skyline. At 450 metres in length, this project is one of Melbourne’s biggest-ever pier builds. It includes 16 kilometres of electrical cables to service the pier, kiosk, breakwater and marina, 240 steel piles, 500 concrete segments. It weighs in at 6,000 tonnes with over 8,800 timber decking boards. An accessible and welcoming pier design includes a wider disability compliant walkway, with more seating and new all abilities toilets.

A new penguin viewing boardwalk has been built to improve the penguin viewing experience and provide significant habitat improvements to provide protection for penguins by separating visitors from the sensitive penguin nesting sites.

The pier’s new low-level water access landing has been constructed near the foreshore and will open once the old pier has been removed. When it opens, it will provide easier access to passenger ferries, tour operator vessels, and private passenger drop-off and pickup for café and beach visits.

Thankyou

In addition to the project team, we’d like to acknowledge the valuable input from a core group of stakeholders who helped guide the project from start to finish - St Kilda Sea Baths, Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron, Earthcare St Kilda, St Kilda Lifesaving Club, Port Phillip City Council and Phillip Island Nature Parks.

Upcoming works

We’re now working to remove the old pier, having kept it open during construction to maintain marina access. We expect the removal to be completed by mid-2025.

Thanks again for your patience as we complete this important project.

Changes to the way you move around the pier

St Kilda Pier is in a unique environment, with a long, narrow project site in one of Melbourne’s most popular outdoor playgrounds. As we work on removing the old pier, users of the Bay Trail should be mindful of temporary detours around the foreshore construction compound.
Please be patient and follow onsite signage and direction from workers.

With adult penguins raising their young at the moment and needing to acclimatise to people, sounds and lights, the viewing boardwalk will be closed in the evenings for the next few weeks. We’ll share more details soon on when visitors will be able to come and visit the St Kilda penguin colony.

Please remember:

  • There is a 100-metre marine exclusion zone around the project worksite – enacted as on water works are underway to support the demolition of the old pier.  Vessels and swimmers must not enter this zone.
  • Boating/swimming zones and speed limits apply around St Kilda Pier - including 5 knot speed zones within 200m from shore and 50 metres from a structure, another vessel or person.
  • A shared wind sports area is located north of St Kilda Pier where kiteboarding and other wind sports are permitted to exceed 5 knots.
