L-R: Ashokkumar (Ashok) Manoharan and Quinn Nguyen at a recent presentation and networking event with global consultancy firm, Cognizant
News from the College of Business, Government & Law
We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.
Welcome to the July issue of our BGL newsletter. Highlights include live events for MBA and law students, growing visibility of our anchor tenancy at Festival Plaza, and new research grants and top-tier journal articles.
It is wonderful to see the return of student events on campus. Although digitisation and COVID have displaced many face-to-face encounters, they have also highlighted the unique value of face-to-face interaction in learning.
Digital delivery is fantastic for flexible learning. Face-to-face delivery is fantastic for rich feedback loops, tacit knowledge exchange, trust and enduring social networks – all of which were evident at the MBA and Law in a Digital Age events.
I very much look forward to more such events as more students return to campus in second semester.
Kind regards,
Michael Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

Outstanding new apps created in Law in a Digital Age
Professor Tania Leiman speaking at the Law in a Digital Age presentation last month
Six new legal applications created by students Congratulations to Dr James Scheibner and the students undertaking Law in a Digital Age for the outstanding presentation of six new legal applications last month!
Anglicare South Australia - Child Contact Services app
Environmental Defenders Office - Tree Information Service app
Ezra Legal - Client Intake Form
Housing Choices SA - Antisocial Behaviour Information Form
Housing Choices SA - Rent Calculator
Uniting Communities - NDIS Review Form
The presentations and the apps were excellent, and particularly impressive due to the fact that the students who undertook the subject had no prior coding experience at all.
The industry clients were highly impressed by the apps that had been developed for them.
Flinders artwork is coming to Festival Plaza
Flinders at Festival Plaza hoarding will soon be visible - keep an eye out
It will soon be visible on the construction site that Flinders University is the anchor tenant on the new Festival Plaza development on North Terrace.
The designs acknowledge that we are on Kaurna land, and that it’s only 19 minutes to Flinders at Tonsley and 22 minutes to Flinders at Bedford Park.
Researcher Spotlight: Associate Professor Cassandra Star
"Better policy can help tackle both the underlying problem and the distribution of burdens from a changing climate. All policy outcomes are shaped by political forces, so we need to understand the processes that lead to decision."

Request for Human Ethics Low Risk Panel Members Human ethics applications that are deemed to be low risk are reviewed by the Low Risk Panel. This panel consists of researchers and professionals from the University who are allocated applications to review on an ad hoc basis / rolling timeline. Currently, there is a shortage of low risk reviewers on this panel. A shortage of panel members translates to lengthy wait times for reviews and approvals for
our researchers.
The Human Research Ethics team is currently looking to recruit new Human Ethics Low Risk Panel Members.
New panel members are provided access to ResearchNow Ethics and Biosafety, as a reviewer, as well as training on how to access, review and comment on applications. No prior experience on ethics committees or writing ethics applications is required. There are no meeting dates and reviews are done out of session. Generally applications would be assigned to each reviewer approximately once a fortnight, and all applications are pre-screened, by the Ethics team, to iron out obvious problems.
If you are interested in being a Human Ethics Low Risk Panel member, or have any questions related to this role, please contact human.researchethics@flinders.edu.au
You're invited to the next VISTA session Dear colleagues,
July features the next VISTA session from the CBGL Learning & Teaching Academy, and you are all invited. This session will be presented by Mark Brommeyer, and is titled Virtual teaching into China - visual, virtual and vibrant.
Mark has been working and teaching in China since 2002; and lecturing with Flinders Health Care Management in China since 2012. Some of the lessons-learned have focussed on:
The importance of cultural awareness in interacting with students
Enhancing student engagement in online situations with small group work, presentations, and other interactions
Contextualising content through localisation and authentic learning experiences
An approach that has worked in facilitating learning across culture, time, and distance
The session will follow the usual format of a ten-minute presentation followed by forty minutes for discussion and questions.
Join us online and in the Moot Court downstairs in the Law Commerce building, or via Teams at 11:00 am – 11:50 am on July 21.
A reminder email with the link for joining online will be sent out closer to the date.
We look forward to seeing you there!
- Roger Howley, on behalf of the VISTA team
Upcoming changes to Westlaw legal database The major Australian legal database Westlaw AU will be replaced with a new platform on 11 July 2022.
The same comprehensive content will remain available, but with a new look, new navigation, and new features designed to improve efficiency and usability. One major change is to FirstPoint; this has been replaced with a 'KeyCite' and 'Key Numbers' system. A suite of
guides and videos can be found on the Thomson Reuters support pages. These changes will be communicated to law students and training will be made available for both students and staff.
If you would like to discuss the impact of these changes for you and your students, please email the library at LibraryEducation.Engagement@flinders.edu.au
Aboriginal Career Exploration (ACE day) At the end of May, The Workabout Centre and Yunggorendi organised for year 10 students to come onto campus and experience what Flinders has to offer.
Three BGL activities were run by Associate Professor Rob Manwaring, Dr Phil Palmer and Dr Andrew Groves respectively. Pictured are moments from Dr Andrew Groves' session, What is crime, and what is Criminology? Which involved learning more about what a Criminologist is and does within South Australia.
From four-day weeks, to unconditional basic income, to free education: it's possible to imagine a future where society’s focus has moved from consumption to quality of life.
In this final instalment of the Australian Industrial Transformation Institute's Future of Work in the Digital Age seminar series, Professor John Quiggin discusses technological possibilities and the way the COVID-19 pandemic changed our thinking.
Hosted by Professor John Spoehr, Director of AITI, this webinar is for anyone interested in the future of work in Australia.

How-to guide: Promote upcoming events, initiatives for students and other relevant College news on our Digital Screens Do you have something to share on the digital screens around campus?
The main digital screens BGL uses are the screens outside Local Brew, the Trading Room in the Law & Commerce courtyard and in Victoria Square. Whilst these are the main sites BGL staff and students visit, we also use the screens at Tonsley and the Plaza Super Screen, depending on the relevance of the content to the broader university.
Do you have news to share?
The deadline for our next newsletter is 15 July.
If you have news about achievements, awards, upcoming events in the College (including online events), new research, media articles or anything else that may be of interest to your fellow colleagues, we want to hear from you by EOD Friday, 15 July.
Please view the guidelines and timetable before submitting your content, then email Nicole at cbgl.newsletter@flinders.edu.au with your news.
