News from the College of Business, Government and Law

We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga

Welcome to the August edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter.

Our August edition introduces two new regular features to our newsletter. The first highlights the top three BGL social media posts for the month. According to recent University reports on organic social media, BGL is often a top performer – in our biggest month this year, May, we were responsible for more than quarter of all College-based social media posts in the University, and almost half of post engagements (that is, active engagements with the post). This is impressive, and an important contribution to our student recruitment. It is worth noting that two of our top three posts for the past month feature students as either content or content generator!

Our second new feature is a spotlight on our PhD students – which joins our spotlights on educators, researchers and professional staff. This edition spotlights Tahlia Hart from Criminology, whose thesis (which she is about to submit) addresses underage access to adult-based dating platforms. In doing so, it covers all key themes of our College mission: technology, health and social impact. I look forward to learning more about our PhD students in future editions.

Kind regards,
Michael

Professor Michael Gilding
Vice-President and Executive Dean

The golden opportunity in our new city campus

The advertisement for our new city campus is on television and streaming services

The domestic marketing campaign for the New City Campus is officially underway! You may have seen the ad on TV or a streaming service - if you haven’t seen it yet, or just feel like enjoying it again, you can view it here. See if you recognise any staff in the ad!

You may have also seen Flinders' golden boxes in Rundle Mall or the Adelaide Train Station recently. Check out this great article
InDaily published about this campaign, which gives a shout-out to our very own Professor Tania Leiman, who enthusiastically greeted visitors curious to learn more about Flinders.

The campaign will continue to aim for high reach and impact, so keep a look out for new and exciting New City Campus marketing.

Top three BGL social media posts

BGL content performed well across all social media channels last month. It was a month of firsts in social media: Flinders launched its long-awaited organic TikTok channel, and the university also debuted its presence on Threads, the newly-launched app owned by Meta that rivals Twitter.

1. Celebrating 10 years of the Flinders Legal Centre |
Instagram Post
Acknowledging the 10 year anniversary of the Flinders Legal Centre, featuring an image of current students interning at the centre with FLC Director, Jo Milne.

2. True Crime. Real Impact. video |
LinkedIn Post
The advertising creative for this Criminology campaign has been in market (including on social media) for some time, but this is the first time the video has been posted organically.

3. Criminology Instagram Reel |
Instagram Reel
Instagram Reels are short-form videos. The best performing reels are often humorous, and tend to have a user-generated look (i.e. something that could have been made by a student using the app themselves). This Criminology reel featured student Lauren House, and suggests regular listeners of true crime podcasts can feed their interest by undertaking a Criminology degree.

Project Symposium for Outer Space Governance

Students taking our Outer Space Governance: Business, Policy, Law and Crime elective topic have the opportunity to build a solid foundation in space law and policy, and learn how to tackle problems in space through innovative, project-based learning. With the space sector experiencing rapid growth globally, the course is a great example of how Flinders provides students with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for.

Watch the new video to see students, industry and academics come together at a recent Project Symposium, where students presented their work and received feedback. This video appears on our web pages, social media, and digital screens across campus.

The survey will remain open until Friday 4 August.

Voice to Parliament session

L-R: Associate Professor Rob Manwaring, Dr. Rowan Nicholson, Dr. Jessica Genauer, Dwayne Coulthard

With the upcoming referendum on a First Nations Voice to Parliament, BGL academics teamed up with Dwayne Coulthard (member of the Uluru Dialogue, SA) to host a College information session for all staff on what the Voice to Parliament is, how it would work politically and legally, and to answer questions from across the College.

Panel members discussed:
Assoc/Prof Rob Manwaring - What is the Voice to Parliament and how will it work?
Dr. Rowan Nicholson - Legal aspects of the Voice to Parliament
Dwayne Coulthard, member of the Uluru Dialogue, SA - What is the Uluru Statement from the Heart and how does it relate to the Voice to Parliament?
Dr. Jessica Genauer - Voice to Parliament - Issues and debate

Dr. Rowan Nicholson will soon appear on the panel at a public lecture on the Voice to Parliament, alongside keynote speaker Professor Tom Calma AO. Further details appear in the 'What's On' section, toward the end of this newsletter.

Research

Time to think small on influencers

‘Mega’ influencers with more than 500,000 followers (think Hugh Jackman, Chris Hemsworth, Ash Barty and Sarah Magusara with millions of social media fans) have led the rise or promoting brands with endorsements by social media celebrities.

However, the number of followers alone is not always the best way for marketers to promote brands and products, according to new South Australian marketing research led by
Dr. Naser Pourazad.

Capacity building for aged care in Asia-Pacific: networks of influence and leadership

Our team at CBGL, including Dr Madhan Balasubramanian and Associate Professor Angie Shafei, in collaboration with colleagues at the Aged Care Research & Innovation Australia (ARIIA) and the College of Nursing and Health Sciences (CNHS), have recently secured a prestigious Australia Awards Fellowship grant.

This unique fellowship will bring together 15 top performers from six different countries across the Asia-Pacific region (India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines). These individuals, selected for their diverse backgrounds and contributions to aged care management, will partake in a bespoke Australian program. The program will include activities such as guest lectures, think tank sessions, research studies, and visits to aged care centres, clinics, and Health Departments located in both metropolitan and rural areas.

To mark the initiation of the fellowship, an inaugural online "Asia Pacific Aged Care Hub" conference has been organised, and we eagerly anticipate welcoming the fellows to Australia from 17th August to 3rd September. Stay tuned for further updates!
