Welcome to another edition of the Need-to-Know newsletter for 2024.

In this month’s Need to Know update, we have included registration and complaints statistics for the 2023/24 financial year, which may be of interest to you. This year we have banned 11 traders and cancelled 6 registrations for failure to comply.

Upgrade to Motor Vehicle Traders register coming soon

The Motor Vehicle Traders Register portal will be upgraded later this year. This new portal is required to update our system technology and improve security. The new portal will be accessible through the Motor Vehicle Traders website. Your registration details will automatically transfer onto the new register.

Decisions from the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal - August 2024

Two recent decisions made by the Motor Vehicle Disputes Tribunal relate to Consumer Guarantees Act (CGA). The first is a timely reminder that traders who sell on behalf of others are still bound by the CGA, while the other covers a tribunal ruling that wasn't complied with by the vehicle trader resulting in a five year ban.

Time of Use Schemes

On 12 August 2024, the Minister of Transport announced that the Government will introduce legislation this year to enable time of use schemes. The purpose of schemes will be to reduce travel times on our busiest roads, improve network efficiency to increase productivity and enable Kiwis and freight to get where they need to go quickly and safely.
