Welcome to the April newsletter

Dear

2024 certainly seems to be flying past very quickly. But as the end of this academic year draws closer we are becoming very excited about the 2024/25 academic year and the opening of our new Leeds City Campus at Trevelyan Square.

A few weeks ago Rt Hon Hilary Benn, Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland and MP for Leeds Central, became the first external stakeholder to visit our new campus. Read more.

Don't forget, if you are planning on purchasing discounted County Stand tickets for York Races on Saturday 25 May, you need to order your tickets by Thursday 16 May.

Congratulations to alumnus Zee Faridi (Secondary PE and Sports Development, 2016) who was named in the Universities UK (UUK) national '100 Faces' campaign, which celebrates the stories and achievements of students who are the first in their family to go to university.

Zee was recognised in the 'local heroes' category for his determination and successes in helping so many others. Read more.

Mick Marshall trophy – 10 years on

Earlier this month we hosted our tenth annual Mick Marshall Staff versus Women’s Football Club 11-a-side football match.

The game started in 2014 to remember Mick, who was the father of the then club captain, Katie Marshall. Mick sadly passed away that year and Katie wanted to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support to remember him. This year's match was organised by student Fallon Longstaff and Alumni Officer Brett Arnall (pictured).

This event has now raised nearly £3,000 in total over the years. This year the staff claimed back the trophy with a 7-5 win, and nearly £200 was raised. See more.

Join us for Trinity Sunday

On Sunday 26 May we're hosting Trinity Sunday celebrations.

Rt Rev Marcus Stock (Bishop of Leeds) will be celebrating Mass at 12 noon, and then there will be a range of fun activities, a chance to see Leeds Trinity archives and much more.

If you would like to join us, please confirm your attendance by Thursday 16 May, it is free to attend. Book here.

Michelle talks about the Beckfoot Trust

Recently we caught up with Michelle Blanchard MBE (Primary Education, 2005) who is Headteacher at Beckfoot Allerton Primary School and Nursery.

Michelle is also Associate Executive Principal across Beckfoot Trust. The Trust is made up of 10 schools, including four secondary schools, four primary schools and two special schools.

We found out more about the Trust and how the schools work together so well. Full story.

Dining room re-creation 40 years apart

This month we welcomed back another group from the Class of 1982 for a tour and chance to reminisce.

We found the prospectuses from their era and several of the group were actually featured in them. One of the pictures that was in the dining room was re-created on the day. See more images.

Featured alumni – Jai Lane

Jai graduated from Management, Business and Marketing in 2007. She is currently an Associate Director for Arup – a British multinational professional services firm that provides design, engineering, architecture, planning and advisory services.

We reconnected with Jai at the start of the year after the University reached out to Arup for an expert to speak at our Construction and Built Environment event. Once Jai found out it was her old University calling she instantly put her name forward.

We caught up with Jai again recently at Arup's impressive new Leeds base in the urban quarter, Wellington Place. As well as a tour we had a chance to sit down with Jai as she remembered her student days. She said: "I learnt everything about the world of business as part of my course. The biggest driver to getting me into procurement was studying the accounting module."

During her career Jai has worked on several large projects classed as nationally significant infrastructure projects (NSIPS). These include working on the Great British Nuclear Small Module Reactor Scheme, Xlinks (which is the UK to Morocco interconnector Energy project) and a £1 billion recycling facility for North London Waste Authority.
