Hello |
 |
What's On in Central Otago - March.

We are very excited to announce that applications for the Arts Gold Awards are open now. Arts Gold aims to seek and celebrate the finest artisans New Zealand has to offer and is open to all New Zealand citizens or permanent residents 18 years and over. Judges for this year's awards are reknowned New Zealand contemporary artist, Dick Frizzell and celebrated director of the Eastern Southland Gallery, Jim Geddes. Applications close at 10pm, Friday 1st August 2019. Entries are open now for another
high profile Central Otago event - the annual WoolOn Awards. WoolOn is one of New Zealand’s iconic fashion events, encouraging both new and experienced designers to create visual, wearable pieces using New Zealand's most sustainable wool fibres. This year for the first time the wool fibre definition is being expanded to include alpaca, cashmere, angora goat and mohair along with the traditional sheep. Also, for the first time, a new award category - 'School Designer' is being offered. This award will go to the top entry designed by a pupil attending primary or secondary school. Visit www.woolon.co.nz for further information. Bookings are being taken now for this year's Festival of Colour. Known as New Zealand’s best little arts festival, the Southern Lakes Festival of Colour takes place over six
exciting days and nights in April, and this year the events spill over into four additional days. The festival is held biennially and brings an outstanding programme of local, national and international arts to the Southern Lakes region, including world-class music, dance, theatre, visual arts and the ever-popular Aspiring Conversations. While based in Wanaka, shows and events also take place in Hawea Flat, Bannockburn and Queenstown. The 2019 Festival of Colour features performances by three major national arts companies - the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and, making their debut in Wanaka, The New Zealand Dance Company, together with a New Zealand exclusive performance by baroque music superstar Jordi Savall, four of New Zealand’s best theatre works, a vibrant music programme based in the gorgeous Spiegeltent, the Pacific Crystal Palace, and
a free street theatre day. The 2019 Dunedin Fringe Festival opens on the 20th March. Initiated in 2000, Dunedin Fringe aims to bring experimental contemporary art to a wider audience and to support the work of emerging artists. This year's programme features an exciting selection of performance, workshops and much more. Currently on show at OCTA Gallery in the Cromwell Heritage Precinct is a collection of recent prints made by Gregory O'Brien, John Pule and Euan McLeod. Toward the end of April OCTA plans to exhibit an extensive range of prints by Dick Frizzell. This upcoming event has been made possible through a collaboration with Dick Frizzell, (the current Henderson House artist- in-residence) and Milford Galleries. Keep an eye out on the Central Otago Arts
'What's On' calendar for further information. Have a happy March and enjoy everything on offer in the arts in Central Otago and surrounds.
