When huge stars die, they go with a bang, leaving behind either a black hole or a neutron star, the densest stars in the universe. Neutron stars are so dense that a teaspoon of their material would weigh 900 times the mass of the Great Pyramid of Giza. For years, astronomers have thought neutron stars and black holes could orbit each other, with their gravity bringing them closer and closer until one day, they’d merge.
Now, for the first time, a faint signal caused by a black hole and neutron star merging has been recorded on Earth. Astronomers detected not one but two gravitational wave signals, ripples in space-time created when the massive objects collided, both recorded in January 2020.
Structural and institutional racism are the cause of under-representation in many fields, yet many people don’t understand what these terms mean. Professor of Race and Education Vini Lander explains.
Meanwhile, a new study shows the dinosaurs were on their way out before the infamous asteroid that made them go extinct. The team studied six families of dinosaurs and found that they were under pressure from climatic deterioration and major changes in vegetation. The asteroid just dealt the final blow.

After ongoing claims that the UK is devoid of this form of discrimination, what does the term actually mean?

If the asteroid caused the very sudden end of the dinosaurs, a new study shows that their decline had begun 10 million years earlier.
