New "Under the Poliscope" blog
Gearing Up for 2023 Part II: Implementing the NIH Data Management and Sharing Policy" discusses two new resources NIH issued that aim to protect privacy and respect the autonomy of research participants when sharing data.

DataWorks! Prize
DataWorks! Prize (open for submissions in September) highlights the role of data sharing and reuse in scientific discovery while recognizing and rewarding researchers who engage in these practices.

Register for NIH Data Management and Sharing (DMS) Policy webinars
Sign up for a webinar on the DMS policy, privacy protections for data from human participants, and justifiable limitations on sharing data.

New NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan template
NIH released an optional DMS Plan format page that walks through the DMS Plan Elements. A preview version is now available. A final, fillable version with instructions will be incorporated into the FORMS-H NIH Application Instructions in the fall.

Genomic Data Sharing Policy update
To reduce burden on investigators subject to the Genomic Data Sharing (GDS) Policy, NIH no longer requires submission of separate GDS Plans. Instead, submit one plan where applicants describe genomic data sharing within their DMS Plan elements.

*NEW* IACUC Policy - Live-Vertebrate Animal Research, Teaching and Testing
The IACUC is undergoing a comprehensive review of its policies to streamline animal research program requirements.  With this, the IACUC has approved a University level policy on Live-Vertebrate Animal Research, Teaching and Testing.

Professional Meetings and Research in Cuba
The Cuban Assets Control Regulations have been amended to include a general license for participating in meetings or research in Cuba. If you are traveling to Cuba for professional purposes, you must coordinate with Brown’s Export Control Team.

Offering online courses to embargoed countries
Offering online courses to students in comprehensively embargoed countries may require authorization from the government. You must contact Brown’s Export Control Team if considering allowing online course participants from embargoed countries.

Grants.gov cloud migration and extended downtime for September 2022
Grants.gov will go Offline Friday, September 23, 2022. Grants.gov will come back Online Thursday, Sept. 29, 2022. Grants.gov cannot receive any proposal submissions during this time. Please see the OSP Announcements page for additional information.

Adjusted NIH and AHRQ grant application due dates from Sept. 22 - 30, 2022
NIH and AHRQ due dates that fall on or between September 22 and September 30, 2022 will move to October 3, 2022. Detailed caveats and considerations can be found here.

Sponsored travel - booking “multipurpose” trips on federal awards. Plan ahead!
OSP is noticing a spike in personal travel combined with business travel. Travelers MUST show a quote of the exact airfare for the sponsor-related portion of the trip at the time of booking. Refer to: Sponsored Travel Policy & Sponsored Travel Policy FAQs

National Research Service Award (NRSA) childcare costs
Each full-time NIH-NRSA-supported fellow and full-time predoctoral or postdoctoral NRSA appointed trainee is eligible to receive $2,500 per budget period for childcare costs provided by a licensed childcare provider. Read more.

NSF retiring FastLane in early 2023
The last day to submit new proposals in FastLane will be January 27, 2023. Previously submitted FastLane proposals will be available for download and file update until September 29, 2023.

FORMS-H coming for January 2023 due dates
NIH will be shifting to a new Forms Set effective January 25, 2023.  FORMS-H will facilitate the submission of the newly required Data Management and Sharing Plan.

Three new Sponsored Research Agreements at Brown
Technology Innovations executed two agreements with a semiconductor contract manufacturing and design company to support Terahertz research by Daniel Mittleman (Engineering). 

Edith Mathiowitz (Pathology & Laboratory Medicine) continues a longstanding partnership with a biotechnology company for immune therapy research. 

New patent for Gabriel Taubin
A new method patent (#11,425,356) was awarded to Gabriel Taubin (Engineering and Computer Science) to calibrate an uncollimated laser diode for 3D imaging applications. His work developing methods of 3D scanning has led to several patents.

Inventor’s Toolkit: Interested in research with Sony?
The Sony Research Award Program provides funding for cutting-edge academic research and helps build a collaborative relationship between faculty and Sony researchers. Apply for an award of up to $150,000 USD by Sept. 15th. Read more.
