News from the College of Business, Government and Law

We acknowledge the traditional owners, both past and present, of the various locations Flinders University operates on, and recognise their continued relationship and responsibility to these lands and waters. We recognise that Flinders was established on the lands of the Kaurna nation, with the main Flinders campus located near Warriparinga.

Welcome to the April edition of the College of Business, Government and Law newsletter.

I have just returned from the United States, where I was part of a JBC-led delegation to the School of Data Science (SDS) at the University of Virginia, one of the top public universities in the USA. The visit built on a recently signed MoU directed towards a research partnership regarding the digital revolution and democratic resilience. As might be expected, a large part of our conversation focussed upon Artificial Intelligence, or as the SDS Director Phil Bourne (a Flinders alumnus) prefers to call it, Augmented Intelligence. Our April newsletter reports on our visit.

The April newsletter also reports on our redeveloped offerings in Accounting and a new internship program at the European Space Policy Institute in Vienna. There is a common theme across these stories – building upon our Washington Internship Program and Port Adelaide Football Club partnership – around iconic partnerships and immersive learning experiences. In the wake of AI, it is safe to say that iconic partnerships and immersive learning experiences will become increasingly important as a driver of student choices and enrolments.

The newsletter also includes details of 4 PhD completions, 8 A/A* journal articles, and $564,289 of new research funding in the College. Congratulations to all our successful students and staff!

Kind regards,
Michael

Vice-President and Executive Dean

Vienna Space Internship Program

Left to right: Marco Aliberti (Associate Manager and Lead on International Engagement, European Space Policy Institute) and Associate Professor Rodrigo Praino (Flinders University).

The Vienna Space Internship Program is an exciting new opportunity available to students in any undergraduate course, who have completed the elective space topic Outer Space Governance: Business, Policy, Law and Crime. The internship will take place at the European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) headquarters in Vienna, where they will explore space law and policy issues.

The European Space Policy Institute (ESPI) is an independent think-tank that provides independent analysis, research and advice on issues related to space, and provides expert input to European decision-makers and institutions. It also works in close collaboration with the European Space Agency and other stakeholders on research and policy projects.

An update on our city campus

Flinders' new city campus is a place where potential meets possibility, providing students and staff with a modern, state-of-the-art campus at the doorstep of key technology, business, sports, government, law, and art precincts.

To learn more about how we are approaching our expansion, take a look at the video message above from the President & Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Students), Professor Romy Lawson, and check out the new staff webpage Program Updates, which includes building and fit-out information, media and news, FAQs and how to get involved.

Staff are invited to join the Change Community to engage in the change and support activities during the transition (where appropriate), register your interest
here. The inaugural Change Community meeting was held this week.

Plus, a Pop Up Showroom (no bookings required) will open later this month on 28 April. The showroom will be available each month in the Alere function rooms, Bedford Park. The showroom will provide you with a place to physically interact with mocked up spaces and example technology, and to find information and ask questions.

New partnership with UVA's School of Data Sciences

We've signed a new partnership with the University of Virginia to expand research and knowledge exchange in AI, data security and democracy

“Technology plays an essential role in the operation of modern society but when misused can present existential threats to the operation of modern democracies across the world,” says Professor Melissa de Zwart, Director of the Flinders University Jeff Bleich Centre for the US Alliance in Digital Technology, Security and Governance. “These risks must also be considered in the broader global security context and rapidly shifting global dynamics.”

This new partnership between the Flinders University Jeff Bleich Centre, in the College of Business, Government and Law, and the University of Virginia’s School of Data Sciences commences in the wake of the recently announced
AUKUS security pact and international technology acquisition program.

PhD Summer Institute in International Trade & Industrial Organisation

Last month, Associate Professor Ilke Onur organised the PhD Summer Institute in International Trade & Industrial Organisation event, which took place on campus.

It comprised high-quality presentations by PhD students coming from across the world. All students received extensive feedback from senior researchers from Germany (University of Tubingen; Max Planck Institute), New Zealand (University of Canterbury), and Australia (Flinders University; University of South Australia).

HDR students from Flinders University also participated in the event and got the chance to interact with PhD students and staff members from various institutions.

Education 📚

Unique Student Identifiers

As you likely know, it was determined that from 1 January 2023, all higher education students, including those who commenced prior to 2021, must have a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to:

  • Be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place (CSP) and Commonwealth financial assistance (HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, OS-HELP, SA-HELP)
  • Graduate and receive their Award. This includes onshore international students and Higher Degree by Research students.

The consequence if students do not provide their USI by the census date for the topics they're enrolled in, is that they will be withdrawn from those topics.

The university is reaching out to these students (by phone call, email and SMS), however, contacting some is proving very difficult. Students will receive a FLO/Canvas sanction after several unsuccessful attempts.

Therefore, academic staff may be asked to make contact with their student/s in their lecture/workshop/tutorial if our attempts to contact have been unsuccessful.

Information on the USI can be found at: Australian Government USI, Flinders University student webpage, usi@flinders.edu.au or 8201 5511.

Preferred names

We'd like to share a friendly reminder on the importance of using students' preferred names - which is not always the same as their legal name.

If a student is known by a preferred name or nickname, they can request this to be recorded in the system for the purpose of forums and their Flinders email. They can request this change of preferred name by submitting a request via Ask Flinders.

Information to Note 📝

As part of the construction work for the new Health and Medical Research Building, a temporary high voltage power shut down is required to some areas on campus in April. All efforts are underway to ensure minimum disruptions to campus. Traffic management will be in place for the University / Sturt Drive intersection traffic light outage.

This work will involve two x 60 minute campus outages, anticipated for:

7am-8am Saturday 15 April 2023 and
3pm-4pm Sunday 16 April 2023

Many buildings across campus will be affected during these periods, including Law & Commerce and Social Sciences South.

During that weekend, there may also be further power outages to buildings on the North and South ridge due to load shedding requirements.

Please note:

  • The power outages will affect lifts across the North Ridge. Security will be able to assist with access around campus via alternative means.
  • Please make people in your areas aware of the outage. Signage will be posted in the coming weeks.
  • Please consider any booked events (such as functions, sports events, classes held by external parties etc) and contact the organisers to arrange alternatives or postponement.
  • If relevant, please clarify with staff which power sources are and are not on a back-up generator (eg red vs white power switches).

Please get in touch via HMRB@flinders.edu.au or lodge a Service One request if you have any events or power sensitive equipment or research that is taking place in the affected areas during these periods.
