What's On in the Arts in Central Otago - May.
New Short Story Competition Launches in Central Otago Writers now have a new opportunity with the inaugural Checketts McKay Short Story Competition. This competition is open to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents aged 18 and over, welcoming both emerging and experienced writers. Entries can be up to 2,500 words and must include a
connection to the Central Otago or Queenstown Lakes region; how this connection is expressed is entirely up to the writer. The judging panel features individuals with strong literary and professional backgrounds: Rosemary Riddell, a former District Court Judge and author; Bridget Auchmuty, a widely published poet and fiction writer; and Annie Villiers, who will act as Chief Sifter. Prizes include $2,500 for first place, $1,000 for second place, and $500 for third place. Entries for the Open Category will be accepted from May 1 to July 31, with winners announced in September. A school Category is also available alongside the main competition, allowing young writers across the region to participate through their schools. Organisers hope this competition will become an annual event, celebrating storytelling and strengthening connections to place through creative writing. For full entry
details and guidelines, visit www.cmlaw.co.nz. Te Puna Mahara - Cromwell Memorial Events Centre The venue team is inviting expressions of interest from across
Central Otago to be part of a community celebration. This landmark facility features a 400-seat theatre, 40-seat cinema, dance studio, café and bar, along with a range of inspiring spaces shaped by some of the finest folk since the gold rush! To mark its opening, a community weekend will be held on July 18 - 19, and the team is seeking performers and creators from across the region to help bring the spaces to life. From cultural groups and choirs to musicians, magicians, dancers, and drum groups - anyone with a performance, presentation, or creative idea is welcome. Whether it’s a short set, a cultural showcase, a talk, concert, pop-up activation, or roving performance, all ideas are welcome. The venue’s spaces will be active from 10am -5pm across both days (indoors and outdoors, weather permitting), offering opportunities to present work in environments suited to your
style. This is your chance to help celebrate the opening of a major new community venue while sharing your talent with the wider region. To take part, click the link below and tell the team what you’d like to do and what support you may need to make it happen. The venues team will curate the programme and be in touch with next steps.
