It will be cold comfort to the locked-down residents of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, but they are arguably the only Australians with any consistency over which states they can travel to — because they’re barred from going anywhere. For everyone else, the situation is more complex.

Anyone who spent time in Sydney recently is barred from most other states, depending on the exact dates involved, while Victoria has closed the border to the whole of NSW, and WA has pulled up the drawbridge to both states. But a trip to Tasmania is still on the cards for almost anyone — even most Sydneysiders, as long as they’re willing to quarantine. Confused yet?

Deakin University’s Chair in Epidemiology Catherine Bennett argues there’s a better way. With almost all cases linked to known clusters in designated hotspots, Bennett says efforts should be focused on contact-tracing and isolating these clusters — not slamming state borders shut and causing even more holiday chaos.

Australia’s mishmash of COVID border closures is confusing, inconsistent and counterproductive

Catherine Bennett, Deakin University

States and territories have reacted to the Sydney COVID outbreak with varying degrees of travel restrictions. But border closures are a blunt tool, given almost all cases are linked to known hotspots.

Distance-based road charges will improve traffic — and if done right won’t slow Australia’s switch to electric cars

Philip Laird, University of Wollongong

The benefits of road-user charging are now well established. And including electric vehicles doesn't have to be a deterrent to their uptake, as New Zealand and other nations have shown.
