Ready or not, here it comes No images? Click here Hi Friend, Welcome to the first Brainwaves for 2022. Although the year has not begun as most of us might have hoped we are optimistic that together we will continue to provide quality support services and activities for the Tasmanian epilepsy community. Below there are links to some of our latest videos produced by our engagement coordinator Colin who left us at Christmas to go back to his passion of working within tourism. We were sad to see him go and grateful for all the wonderful work he did during his time with Epilepsy Tasmania. You are aware of the quality podcast series produced by Ikin Media (link here) and we are excited to announce they are developing a new series for us called Symphony of the Brain. This series will be slightly different and will dig deeper into epilepsy and how it changes lives. We will soon be looking for people to take part in this initiative. Epilepsy Tasmania recently provided the State Government with a new budget submission to continue funding the popular telephone service we successfully developed as a result of the Covid pandemic. The link to the submission can be found here. Please be in touch if you would like to speak with us further. Wendy Groot, CEO Epilepsy Tasmania. Peer SupportWe are very excited that we now have Peer Support groups meeting on a regular basis. This gives people living with epilepsy, or families and carers of people with epilepsy, the opportunity to meet others going through similar experiences and discuss their stories and feelings with people who have a shared understanding. These meetings also focus on topics/themes as requested by members of the groups, with anything from medication, isolation, diet, wellbeing, driving, memory etc. being discussed. As to be expected, the stress of Covid is quite a frequent topic of concern, so we focus on strategies to minimise this impact while living with epilepsy. In addition, we understand if you aren’t ready or don’t feel comfortable discussing these things in front of others, so please remember that we also offer individual peer support. If you are interested in joining one of our groups or accessing our service individually, please contact Amy on: 0419596489 or email: support@epilepsytasmania.org.au March = Epilepsy Awareness MonthThe theme of this year's national campaign is the fact that every 33 minutes someone has their life turned upside down by epilepsy. Experiencing multiple seizures and being given an epilepsy diagnosis turns lives upside down - work, independence, study, health and friendships are all affected in some way. Please start thinking of ways you can raise awareness of how epilepsy turns lives upside down, and also how you can raise funds for Epilepsy Tasmania so we can continue to be here when Tasmanians need us. In the next edition of Brainwaves we will provide a link to our new online portal where you can register your event or idea. Epilepsy TrainingOur 2022 training to schools and disability providers is well underway and we are pleased to see that each year more and more organisations are prioritising the health and safety of their students, workers and customers. "The new year starts before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written."Melody BeattieEpilepsy Tasmania is a not-for-profit community organisation improving the quality of life of Tasmanians with epilepsy, and those around them, through education, coordination and support. |
