Click here ![]() March 2024A Message from the Dean of the School of Communication![]() As we approach the culmination of yet another enriching academic journey, I find myself reflecting on the profound sense of gratitude and pride that swells within me as Dean of the Chapman School of Communication. My journey alongside the brilliant minds of our faculty, the boundless enthusiasm of our students, and the unwavering support of our staff has been nothing short of extraordinary. Each day, I am reminded of the immense privilege it is to lead such a dynamic and inspiring community. Beyond the customary accolades and achievements, it's the personal connections and shared moments of discovery that truly define our school. Whether it's the animated discussions in classrooms, the collaborative endeavors in research labs, or the quiet moments of reflection in our study spaces, each interaction reaffirms the remarkable spirit of camaraderie and intellectual curiosity that thrives within our midst. In an age where communication is both a powerful tool for connection and a potential source of division, our school stands as a beacon of enlightenment and understanding. Together, we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of communication with integrity, empathy, and a steadfast commitment to truth. As we pause to celebrate our collective achievements and contemplate the journey ahead, I am filled with optimism and excitement for what the future holds. Together, let us continue to push the boundaries of knowledge, foster meaningful connections, and inspire positive change in our communities and beyond. Thank you for being an integral part of this extraordinary journey. Here's to the Chapman School of Communication, where passion meets purpose, and where every voice is not only heard but valued. That is my attempt to get ChatGPT3.5 to write a Dean’s message. I did something similar last year on an earlier version of ChatGPT, but this time I tried harder at what we now call prompt engineering. I went several rounds with it, giving it examples of my writing, and prompting it to refine the responses. I find this result to be very encouraging, and here is why. Every single sentence in the message involves a cliché, an empty phrase, or worse, plain old hockum. I can’t quite decide which phrase is my favorite: “where passion meets purpose” (pretty original, don’t you think), or perhaps it is “pride that swells within me”. I admit that I am optimistic about the future, but let’s not get carried away. I’m not “filled with optimism and enthusiasm for what the future holds”. Like you, I’m also a bit worried. So, why am I encouraged by ChapGTP3.5? This message illustrates that we are not so replaceable as the fear-mongers want us to think. No doubt we are already seeing many AI generated messages and images, but there is still plenty of room for genuine, human communication. When we pay attention, we recognize each other. We know how to detect bad faith if we try. For me, it is not just a matter of generative AI missing out on “my voice”. It is also my experience that is missing; my faith; my friends who know my jokes; my peeves. Also, my ability to know when I say something stupid, and to make fun of myself. Don’t underestimate that. AI may get closer to mimicking us, but it will only be mimicry. Join me in being encouraged. Because of our humanity, we know how to listen for one another. [Sorry, that last sentence was a ChatGPT-level cliché. I’ll try to do better next time.] M.
