Black holes. Exoplanets. White dwarfs. What can these astronomical phenomena tell us about life on earth?

This month, UW–Madison hosted a meeting of the American Astronomical Society and university researchers presented a number of findings from across the universe. Their research investigates ingredients in the recipe for planet formation, star-shaping black holes and exoplanet oceans that could harbor life.

    Is it possible to enjoy ice cream in the summer heat without a melty mess?

    Cameron Wicks, a PhD student in UW–Madison’s Department of Food Science, is working on a new technology that adds naturally occurring compounds to ice cream to help it hold its shape, leading to fewer drips when left at room temperature.

    Can't Stop a Badger

    Whether earnest or eccentric, the 1,000+ student organizations on UW–Madison's campus create unique experiences that prepare Badgers for life beyond the classroom.

    Materials science students bust down doors at a metal casting competition, placing third with a new design of a multi-purpose firefighting tool. 

    More OBGYN residents will train in Wisconsin's rural communities as UW School of Medicine and Public Health seeks to bolster dwindling rural maternal health services.

    UW–Madison 175th Anniversary State Tour
    UW–Madison continues its anniversary celebrations throughout the state this summer. Upcoming state tour events include a visit to Chippewa Falls/Eau Claire on August 14.

    June - August
    Universe in the Park
    Universe in the Park (UitP) is hosted at state parks throughout Wisconsin with UW–Madison experts giving talks, answering questions, and helping attendees view astronomical objects. Upcoming events include:

    • Perrot State Park (Trempealeau, WI) & Kohler-Andrae State Park (Sheboygan, WI) – June 29
    • Yellowstone Lake State Park (Blanchardville, WI) – July 6
    • Newport State Park (Ellison Bay, WI) – July 7

    June - September
    2024 CALs Field Days
    Summer is field day season at the UW–Madison CALS Agricultural Research Stations. Over the course of the growing season, the stations host more than a dozen public events to share research updates and educational information with agricultural professionals, home gardeners and others. Upcoming events include: 

    • UW Potato Research Field Day (Hancock, WI) – July 11
    • Pasture Walk with Marathon County – (Marshfield, WI) – July 18

    The University of Wisconsin 175th Anniversary state tour is back on the road this summer, relaunching with a visit to the Fox Valley on May 30 to celebrate the university’s longstanding partnership and connection to local businesses, community groups, leaders, alumni and future Badgers.

    At the UW 175 community gathering in Appleton, more than 220 guests enjoyed free Babcock ice cream, games and Wisconsin camaraderie at Poplar Hall on the Fox River. In the photo above, Jay Burmeister gets the opportunity to meet one of his idols, Bucky Badger.
